Re: High Voltage

I have unregulated voltage on 55 and 70 HP OMC's and see 17 volts quite often. It takes a while to get used to it but I haven't had any problems with batteries yet in 2 seasons of using these outboards. I check the battery water level often and keep the terminals clean and tight. I also have a Yandina combiner to route the voltage to the trolling battery once the starting battery goes over 13.5 VDC.

I've heard of guys turning on the running lights and other electrical devices on long runs to bleed off some of the juice.

I have a string of LED rope lights on the pontoon that have never had any issues with the higher voltage.

Thanks. I guess that means I shouldn't have any problems with charging a second battery when I add one this winter.

Re: High Voltage

You should keep an eye on the battery water level too Bill.

Thanks Fed. Until I figure out what is going on or get comfortable with the high readings I will be watching the battery like a hawk.

Re: High Voltage

OMC/BRP may still make a voltage regulator for this situation. Part # 173640.

Thanks Bobbie, that part says it's for V-4 and V-6's but I have seemed to have some resolution to my problem. Since my old motor wanted to be fussy today I had to do some serious cranking this afternoon to get it to started. My voltages were in range on the fishfinder the whole time on the lake. Had my roommate bring me my DVM, tested the battery with the engine running tested at 13.1v with my lights on and 13.2v with lights off(at idle). The fishfinder was reading the same thing. Seems my voltmeter is off for some reason now.

Thanks for everybodies input and advice, I'm a happy camper(boater), now if I could just catch some fish.

Keep your lights on when running and see what happens.

I've been doing that since I noticed the high readings, based of my DVM and my fishfinder readings it's my voltmeter that is off. Just going to keep an my eye my battery, definately been a learning experience about my motor though. Thanks for all your help.
