high water in bilge

Last year my 17''96 larson I/O 3.0 VolvoPenta was moored during an afternoon storm. When the storm past I went to the boat and turned on the bilge pump to remove water. Although I did not look in the bilge I do believe the water was probably over the starter. Is it possible water could have gone thru the transom and into the bellows? If so how would you approach the issue?

Thanks

TeX:

You may wish to put a float switch on the pump.. That way you dont have to turn it on and may save you some problems...

T

I wouldn't compromise the integrity of the bellows in any way whatsoever. Best to go via the outdrive, which will open them without risking damage. Or, park bow-below-stern on a good hill and raise the outdrive as high as you can; any water should run out. Re-grease the gimble bearing and relax.

I was Thinking that.....
It's Such a Pain to get the Bellows, Glued into place......
I'd think it's Both, Easier,+ Safer, to pull the Drive........

Yea, it's probably best to yank the whole drive.

Hello,Pull your complete drive. Six bolts and about 20 minutes and you will have your answer. If things look rusty and the gimbal bearing don't turn smooth as silk when you spin it then you need to start pulling it apart to fix things. Good luck!

Thanks gang! Are there special tools or tips any of you could offer on the reinstall? Should I be scribing any marks on shafts or such as that?
