Hinge Pin

Is it possible to remove the upper transom hinge pin and replace it on an alpha one Gen 1 without pulling the motor? I believe this is the proper term for the pin, but if not its the one at the top of the transom assembly, that allows the side to side movement of the drive. It's worn out and getting dangerously loose. Any tips for that, other than to bite the bullet and pull the motor?

If not, how many hours does it usually take for a good mechanic to pull and replace a 350?

Here is a link to the drive service manual. I think you are talking about the vertical steering shaft in the gimbal ring.
Have a look at section 4B starting on page 4B-11. It can be done without pulling the engine. I wouldn't do it, but it's possible.

How long to pull an engine is totally dependant on access. I've had some I could take out in an hour, some (Same type engine and drve) all day because the boat manufacturer built the boat around the engine with no access.

That's exactly what I'm talking about here...After reviewing the manual, they recommend drilling 2 large holes in the upper transom assy, then using a "pin punch" to remove the nut?? Merc actually sells a kit, so it must work, right?? lOl

Sounds crazy, has anyone ever tried this technique?? Does it work? Seems really dicey at best to get that nut off like that..Must take forever

I did it once, now I remove the engine and pull the transom shield off the boat to fix it.

So Don:

I think you are right about removing the engine. Tougher, but easier at the same time! What's the downside to the bushings being worn, other than the slop? Is there a chance the drive could fall off, or would it be more likely that the pin would just continue to eat away at the transom shield? In other words, I think I'll wait one more season, and pull the motor and do it right....

I had a reply,but somehow it got eaten.

I don't think you can responsibly state that it is dangerously sloppy,and say you'll repair it next season.Quite an oxymoron.If it quits at speed ..... you or someone else could die.

FIX it now.
