So my friend has a sailboat he said that washed up on shore. It has a hole bigger than my hand in the back of it. How would I go about fixing this?

Josh

This boat your "friend" "found" does NOT belong to him.
It has registration numbers and a hull ID number on it.

no no, This boat my friend found has was washed up on the shore and he found it later. He lives on a clif with stairs to get down to the dock and he noticed it one day it had washed up. (Now keep in mind everyone can see this boat from the lake. there were no trees or anything blocking the view) so it was there for about 6 months. Then 6 or 7 months later. (today) he decide to drag it over to is dock and there was a hole in it. So no one has come and got it. There is no telling how long it has been sitting there before my friend saw it. And I have not seen any kind of numbers on it anywhere.

It's still not his damn boat. Have your friend do his due dilligence and find out WHO'S boat it is before he even thinks about laying a finger on it.

I have to agree that it's not his boat. The hole in the back may have been an intentional means of doing away with the hull number. At the very least he needs to report it to the police, tie it up to his dock (or beach it on his beach if it won't float). The police should let him know what he needs to do to become the owner.

In terms of fixing the boat, we'd need a few more details, fiberglass, wood, aluminum? How big is the boat? Does it have a brand name on it anywhere?

If the boat is considered abandoned, your friend can probably find a way to own it if he wants it, since he "found" it. But, I'd guess he isn't the proud owner yet.

If there are registration numbers on it, the owner can be found. Report it to the police.

It could have been stolen, used, then scuttled and abandoned. It happens a lot up here in Minnesota. Just in the past week, two boats on trailers have been stolen just in one town. A lot of times, these just get abandoned after a while.

If you find a boat with registration numbers on it, call the cops.
