Hey all..

My boat loves water so much it insists on turning into a bath tub every time it sits in the water. I pulled the motor and found 5 holes in the transom from the original motor. I effortlessly popped out what appeared to be dowel rods that were put in there to "seal" the holes. What can I use to fill and seal the holes??

ok, clueless, 1st make sure there is not any rot in there. if there is, it is going to have to come out., winter project. 3m 5200 is a permanet filler, but not if rotten wood exists. you might get by putting 3m4200 in the holes and redoing the transom over the winter.

Thanks Daddy. I noticed some rot in there, and yes, I do know that will have to come out. I have already planned on replacing the transom during the winter. I won't have anything to do since my wife will be going on deployment with the Navy shortly after Christmas. I just want to be able to enjoy a couple months of boating before I tear this thing down to parade rest.

Is that a cored huul?
if so you will have to let it dry out before you glass, filling with 5200 is half *** way to fix it, you should dry it out fill with a polyester glass filler then glass over it and gel coat after that.

Marine Tex is a quick & easy fix for this until you redo the transom.

I have no idea what a cored hull is. From all the threads I've read, it seems like Marine Tex is the way to go for this until I split the boat in two this winter for the transom overhaul.

a cored hull is a material like balsa wood, or a foam like air x that is sanswish between the glass for strength and to make it light. there are a few differnt types of core materials that are used.
balsa soaks up the water and makes glassing hard.

Ironhorse, it looks like it is wood, maybe plywood, in there. I went ahead and used marine tex to get a temp fix until I have time over the winter to do it right. Luckily, between the marine tex and sealing the engine mounting bolts with silicone sealant, I have made a drastic improvement in the watertight integrity of the boat. So we'll be able to enjoy the rest of the boating season with a smile.
Thanks for the advice and the chance to meet another Sailor. It's an honor to be in such company of dedicated Sailors on this website. Warmest regards, AT1(AW) Chad D. Weaver, Strike Fight Squadron 122.

Tashasdaddy, HM2, I will pass the word. We love what we do and the chance to serve our country. She's as tough as nails and if you remember the Ordnancemen rating, then you can imagine how hard headed this woman is. LOL!!!!

Well it looks like the Navy guys got you to a 2.0 transom . That repair will do you fine for the season.

If your transom is plywood filler and it has some rot in there the best thing you can do is what you have planned. What I have done in the past is drill out the holes and if I get good wood comming out with the drilling then I get dowels that fit tight, sand down the area and glass it, paint it and call it good. This maysave you money and a lot of time. This repair should last a very long time if you make sure the area is free from dirt, grease, and water when you glass it. When you get out of the Navy, get a job working on aircraft you could buy a brand new boat.

I spent 18 months in Viet-Nam in the Army, 5 th SF. Total Army service was 6 years. I joined the Navy after a 10 year break, spent 8 years 6 months ,25 days in the Navy. U.S.S. Fox,CG 33 ( HTC ) Never got within 100 yards from the brow of a bird farm, them things scared me LOL . Now my youngest son is in Bagdad in the Army. You take care.

is 122 out of lamore? i am on det in japan (i am a jar head) and i think 122 was out here, or it could of been 94. actually i think it was 94 becuase they were prowlers not 18's. anyway best of luck on the transom fix. I went through that several times with older boats and just filled them with marine tex or silicone. silicone is frowned upon but it worked till i got rid of the boat or whatever have fun.
