Hello all ,

I took my boat out earlier this season and it was quite hard to start , after further investigation I found that the accelerator pump was not squirting fuel down the throat of the carb when the throttle was opened .

I got a gasket kit and have it torn apart right now , I was fully expecting to find the diapram for the pump ripped or a plugged up tube , or pump nozzle.

however , everything looked great , all of the channels were clean and open , the pump nozzles werent gummed up and the diaphram itself was not torn . The little check ball seems OK and was not stuck.

I have the new gaskets and diaphram in there and have not tested it yet , but I am also not terribly confident that I have fixed the problem as everything was / is good in that regard ......it just doesnt feel like I have changed much.

Is there anything that I am missing ? what can cause an accelerator pump to fail other than items mentioned above

TIA

On mine the diaphragm was not torn but it was hard and lost its flexibility over time so was not adding much fuel.
Also the side linkage was a little gummed up and was not making the full motion pumping action.
New diaphragm, cleaned up and lubed the side linkages and was back in action.

well that is good news , my diaphragm certainly lost some of its original flexibility , who knows how old it was - hopefully thats the culprit.

there are two check valves/balls in the accelerator circuit.

one is in the bottom of the bowl, this one normally plugs with sediment/crud. depending on year, this is either a check ball, or a rubber flapper. if its the rubber flapper, cut the tip of the *** off of it after you pull it thru or it will hang up your float
the other is under the squirt nozzle, this one can also stick with sediment/crud

make sure both are free, all passages are clear (with a piece of fishing line or a spray of wd-40, etc.) and make sure the diaphragm is pliable.

Mine has the check ball thats below the float , it appears to let gas into the accelerator pump area , but not back into the main fuel bow . from what I can tell it is functioning as there was gas in the pump.

The other that you are talking about , is that the little pointed metal cylinder thats below the pump nozzle ? I wasnt expecting that in there and almost lost it when I flipped the carb upside down.

yes. its actually a needle (same part that is in the adjustable needle/seat) those tend to become stuck if the carb sits for more than a year

now you know where both check valves are for the pump

pump it first to set the choke and prime the motor.

If you have been unable to get pure gasoline then the ethanol will turn the diaphfram into plastic. This happened to me a few years ago.

yeah I try to use non ethanol gas in the boat wherever possible. Probably 70/30, there are sometimes pure gas is just not an option.

Got the carb on over the weekend and fired up nicely .

I did have to dial in the idle mixture screws , it didnt want to stay running at first .

but she is good to go now , accelerator pump squirting like a champion! (my money is on the check valve below the pump nozzle causing the initial problem )

Thanks all for the help
