Out of the fire and into the fryin pan . Got my electrical squared away for the moment and went to make some adjustments on my Holley 4010 and cannot get one of the floats to respond and I can't figure it out.
I have watched the videos, read the information and nothing that I have applied has any effect. I had this engine running fine a few months ago but now I can't even get it to start.
I adjusted one of the floats to where the fuel comes out the sight hole when the engine is rocked. The front float though is another problem altogether. First I saw no fuel at the sight window so I backed off the SCREW and turned the NUT to the left or counter clockwise and can not get fuel rise up to where it shows at the sight window. In fact , I wound up backing the screw all the way out in an attempt to get fuel to show but nothing ever did. Had a geyser of fuel when the screw popped out.
For the life of me I can't understand how the nut adjusts anything because it's not attached to anything , it's just a jam nut so WTF , over ?
i had taken the coil wire loose and was turning the engine over to fill the float bowls then making an adjustment and then repeating this procedure but nothing I did brought the fuel level up the the sight window.
When that did not work I replaced the coil wire and tried to start the engine , no go . I had not had any problems a few months ago. I used carburetor cleaner and it would just run until the cleaner was burned up then die.
Unless some one has a little knowledge to share with me and knows what the problem might be I am going to pull the top off of the Holley 4010 crackerbox and look at the needle on that side . I don't want to because I don't have another gasket for it but from where I stand , I see no other alternative .
a'little help anyone ??

remove the jamb nut, the needle/seat has flats on it. turn that (3/8" or 5/16" if memory serves), then re-install jamb nut and screw. if that doesnt work, spend the $6 on a new needle and seat and $10 on a set of bowl gaskets

I went out and unscrewed the screw and jamb nut and nothing sticks up above the threaded brass in the top of the float bowl. Are the flats you are talking about down in those threads ? What would I use to turn said flats on the needle and seat ?

pull the bowl. if you have blue gaskets, you can reuse them.

with the bowl removed, you can turn it with your fingers until the flats and threaded portion are up to where the nut can grab them.

Ahhhh , so those brass threads ARE supposed to be above the shoulder of the float bowl. I had a similar problem with this same " rebuilt " carburetor when I first mounted and ran it before installation. Don't recall if it was the same side or not.
I forget the color of the gasket but I can order another tomorrow if I need to.
Will tear into it in the morning and we will see what the problem is with this little bugger.
I had a sight glass break off in the threads that I got out this morning. Glad they are made out of some kind of plastic because I was able to use a small flat blade screwdriver that I heated up with a torch and melted a deep slot into it and just unscrewed it . Worked like a charm and since I did not drill it there wasn't a bunch of trash to worry about getting into the float bowl.

my findings this morning , the seat /needle , is screwed down to level with the shoulder of the float bowl so the adjustment nut does not grab onto anything to make an adjustment. At last I fully understand how this system is supposed to work.
The flats of the seat/needle are down in there and do not really stick up. I took a small flathead screwdriver and poked it down beside it hoping I could get it to move but could not get the the seat/needle to move. So I just ordered the gasket for the float bowl assembly and will proceed to remove the top of the cracker box .

Hot dang , had an idea that worked for a change. I have another Holley carburetor that I took the adjusting nut off of and then scraped of the gasket from the bottom so it would be up against the the shoulder of the float chamber . I set it on top of the needle\ seat and pushed down firmly as I turned it to the left and it caught ahold of the flats and backed the threads up where the adjuster now performs it's duty.
Re adjusted the float turned the key and she fired off and ran smooth . Even the vacuum gauge I've got hooked up to it reads in the normal running range . Looks like I'm going to have some extra gaskets but that is just fine with me considering .
Thanks AGAIN for your help Scott Danforth it was your mention of the flats on the needle that clued me into a way to fix this without tearing down the carburetor again.
