Re: Homemade Seats

There is a boot called Runabout Renovation that details building seats in fair detail (along with anything else you could want to know about rebuilding an old boat.
Re: Homemade Seats

If you like the back-to-back lounge seats, you can't make them for less than you can buy them. I pulled mine out, built a stow box base out of plywood for the pilot and co-pilot and put a folding fishing seat with swivel on the lid of each box. Both seats cost me less than $75, including hardware for the lids/seat/swivel bases. I use cushioned ice chests bungeed to the sides if I want seats behind these two, plus I have two built-in seats in front of the windshield.
If you want to get real simple, just use some wood about 12-14 inches wide, from side-to-side across the beam to make a bench(s). Then throw on some pads or cushions. I've also seen folks build simple plywood benches/boxes running the length of the cockpit, and with removeable cusions.
This is limited only by your creativity and wallet. Good luck.

Re: Homemade Seats

I built (click link) these seats from scratch for my Whaler. I have since removed the rear bench because it got in the way while fishing the stern but it worked great for hauling the family. I used standard flotation cushions for comfort.

The pilot seat is just a box so I can store some gear. The seatback is reversible making it easier to use while fishing.

JB: In case you visit the site, I am planning on building reproductions of the original mahogany interior sometime in the near future. I know how you love to see Whalers kept as original as possible :D

Whaler Proud's Whaler

Even cheaper than mellowyellow's suggestion is this:

Wise two-tone lounge seats $130 each - that's what I'm putting in my boat this fall (going to redo floor, carpet and seats). That same site (go to yahoo shopping and search) also has jump seats for $75 each.

Then again, there's alway eBay....

Good luck!
