I have just purchases a brand new 40 Hp 2 Stroke (2002) Merc.out of the box. I am in the process, time allowing to break it in, I have about 1.5 hrs on motor. My motor came with the wiring for a engine alarm hookup but my controls dosn't have an alarm on it. Is it possible to hook up a external alarm on this engine? If possible where can I purchase one, and how would I hook it up? Thier is one spare wire coming from harness by the controls it is a browny grey colour??

Re: Hooking Up Engine Alarm

You stop at Radio Shack and buy an electronic buzzer for about $3.00. You connect one wire to the buzzer and the other end of that wire to a 12V circuit that is hot when the key is on ( the +12V terminal on the gas gauge or tachometer will work). The brown/tan wire from the temp sensor on the engine should run forward through the harness. Connect that wire to the other terminal on the buzzer. To test the system, turn the key on and ground the temp sensor wire.

Wiring diagrams are in the Service Manual for your engine. Try e-bay.
