Hot, but cooling works

I have a merc 7.5 -84 that gets hot, but the cooling system seem to work since there is water coming out the pee-hole. The enginge seem to run well, but I noticed that it smelled.

It is the drive-shaft housing that is hot, too hot to hold your hand on it. Touching the motorblock close to the cylinders just feels 'warm'.

Does anyone have an idea of what to check?

is water coming out the exhaust, the pee hole just lets you know the impeller is working, the thermostat may not be opening, the exhaust goes down the leg along with the waste water cooling it.

had exact same problem with a 1983 7.5. was the thermostat. about a 10 dollar part. took about one minute to install. im no mechanic but was pleased it was such an easy fix. you get great advice on this forum. good luck and good fishing.

Don't know if that engine has a stat but if it does I'd replace it without hesitation, whether it is the problem or not.....just for the heck of it if for no other reason. Your merc dealer can tell you if it has one if you can't find it. Like they say, $10 part and you can buy it on here.

I fiddle farted around and it cost me a $1000 engine overhaul on one engine. Course I didn't know it had a stat beforehand.

No, my enginge does not have a thermostat..

I have recently done two things to the engine (one good and one not so good thing..)
1 - I changed one of the coils. It has not been running on that cylinder for over a year and I finally found the problem.
2 - When changing the gear lube, I accidently mixed up the lube can with marine grease at first. I changed the lube and then ran the engine shortly and then 'flushed' the gear housing with new lube. I think that got rid of the grease in it.

May any of these things affect the temperature? Last season it was never runnning hot, but then it was only running on one cylinder. I have also replaced the impeller recently.
