I was waking up an old seahorse this morning and noticed there was a weak dribble coming out of the peehole. I shut the motor off and noticed the back of the motor (where the exhaust/peehole is) was too hot to touch. The inside of the motor was also hot to touch in places.

The motor will will still turn over on one pull, so I don’t think it’s seized, but I’m not running it again until I figure out the heat issue.

I want to check thethermostat and impeller, but the thermostat cover was too hot to touch and the cover is not coming off! Does this mean the thermostat is shot if it got that hot?

Water was coming out of two othe holes that are on both sides of the lower part (just above the water line) - what are these other two holes?

There is not enuff water in your test bucket !-----Water comes out of those 2 holes is normal.----Looks like about a 60 / 61 model 10 HP.----A very fine motor.

The water is like 6-8 inches above the intake...I think it’s high enough...right?

Water has to be 6 / 8" above the pump.----They are not self priming .-----Often the impeller housing is worn / corroded and air leaks from one side of vanes to the other.----Just take the lower unit off and replace the impeller now.

Water pump should be submerged before starting the motor. That means yours is not deep enough.

So you are "waking it up"?? Did you go in and replace the water pump impeller? If you didn't, you should. Even if it "looks" good, replace it if it is old.

Those two holes near the lower mount are drain holes and a considerable amount of water coming out is normal and necessary.

That thermostat cover should pry off with no problem, if you feel you must. But water should spray out the exhaust relief any time it is running, no matter what the thermostat state is, open or closed.

well ****...I’m new to this. Did I mess anything up running it? I ran the motor for a few minutes before feeling it get too hot to touch and then shut it down. It will still turn over if I pull the cord.

Remove bypass covers to look at pistons / rings.----Compression test too.-----A bypass cove is held on with 4 screws .---One of those covers often has a fuel pump.----Model # of your motor ?

...In other words, you need water about half way up the leg. The impeller is at the break between the lower unit and the leg, and the pump is not self-priming.

A more shade tree approach would be to replace the impeller, put the screws back in the t.stat cover and fire it up at idle. If it starts let it run a bit while monitoring temp. It might not be a bad idea to retorque the head cover bolts, at least any that feel loose. Use a box wrench to test. (I can't give you torque values, offhand.)

You should immediately see water exiting out the relief hole(s) on the back of the leg if the pump is working.
