Hour Meter install?

I was wondering if any of you guys ever installed an hour meter on your boat that didnt have one? My aquasport didnt come with one and I wanted to keep track of my hours on it. Can I use the wire that goes to the RPM gauge? Or do I need to run a seperate wire else where? Thanks

i think you need a constant power 12v that comes on when the engin is running.

Ayuh,......

Run a wire to it from the "Ign" terminal of the Key Switch....
And a Ground of course......

Hour meters are nothing more than an electric clock mechanism that provides a cummulative reading of hours. Be aware that if you are in the habit of leaving the key on without the engine running, the hour meter will log time. As long as the meter has power to it will log time -- engine running or not.

Is there a difference in wiring? From automotive wire vs. marine wire? Cause I have tons of auto wire.

as far as i know there is no differance im sure someone will correct me if im wrong but i would be sure to use heat shrink on all connections

Yes there is a difference in marine wire or tined wire, but if you are using it in a confined area out of the elements the auto wire will work fine.

Thanks, Its just to wire my hour meter. I plan on checking all my wiring from time to time and everything else on the boat and motor.
