Hours on motor

I am looking at buying a 2004 Johnson 90, 2 stroke. There is no hour meter on the boat, but the owner swears it has LOW hours. Is there any way to get the # of hours off of this motor? Can a dealer put it on the computer, or does this model not have that option? Seems like a decent guy, but I'd rather know for sure.

Low hours and all highway miles. Check the compression, leg oil, shifting and the overall condition. Rick.

Thanks Rick, I am planning on doing a compression test, and checking the lower unit oil, ect. I would just like to have an accurate idea of the hours on the engine too.

99% of all boats do not have an hour meter. and the 90 does not have then capability to be read. i do not know of any carbed motor, that is.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Thanks, I'm taking it out for a sea trial tomorrow after the compression test. I appreciate the input.
