I have an 82 200 HP Johnson that I just Got. Compression is good but it has obviously overheated. The little plastic thing on the left thermostat was melted. I'm getting a backfire through the exhaust as well. It got hot pretty fast too. How bad do you guys think this could be? Worse the head gaskets?

Good compression would be 100+ lbs per cylinder on that engine. Solid, even compression on all 6 holes is a good sign. That means the head gasket seal rings are intact and probably that the heads are not warped. The nylon pressure relief valves in each thermostat housing will get heat deformed. Replace them along with new thermostats. Resolve the original reason for the overheat (faulty impeller?) and start the engine back up. Let it idle and keep a laser temp gun aimed at the heads for 1/2 hour to see what happens. Backfiring through the carbs is usually related to bad timing, such as a sheared flywheel key, or a coil leads mis-routed to two spark plugs. If the engine suffered a high rpm overheat lockup, the key might have sheared. Unlikely, but anything is possible.

That is encouraging, but the pressure relief valve wasn't deformed, it was melted into a blob. I plan on replacing the thermostats and water pump impeller and housing. My main concern was that there was serious damage and I was spending good money after bad on a toasted motor. Once I get it to not overheat I will run it at night to see if I am getting an electrical arc someplace. The "pop" was coming from the exhaust and not the carbs.

I was looking up the parts I would need to replace the t-stat and hardware and could only find individual parts. Does anyone know of a kit that has everything............. t-stat, springs, retainers, seals, gaskets, etc.??

I would pull the heads and inspect cylinders for scuffing if it got that hot, a compression test wont tell you anything as your dont have a previous compression test to refer to, Crossflows do not like to get hot!!!!

Bombardier does not sell thermostat kits. Sold individually. Check out their factory exploded parts diagrams at epc.brp.com for the part numbers you need.

I found a thermostat kit from Sierra. Part number 18-3674. The kit fits all v-6 cross flow engines. Has anyone seen a good video on how to install the thermostat and all the springs etc?

I did get the heads off and all looked good. the deflectors were melted too. I pulled the water pump and it wasnt bad at all. Showed a little age but no scoring on the bottom plate and no warping on the impeller. I did find that the popping was in fact from arcing from the coil feed wires. I had a few bad melted and corroded wires on the harness. I had a spare set that were like new so they will go once the heads go back on.

What cranking compression numbers do you get with the new head gaskets?

I did the same thing...Man my arms got tired, but the heads are flat and on . I used sealer as advised in a different post. All is new and I just did the water pump last night. I have a few wires to connect after work today or tomorrow then time for a test with the muffs.
