Well so far so good!

It's been pulled out and driven about 12 miles to the boat mechanic.
My old truck did great pulling it too, all 6000+ lbs. But I'm really glad that I didn't have to stop fast! The surge brakes do work but there's no kwik stopping.

With 6,000 pounds in tow, there will be no quick stopping, even with the best of brakes. That's why one needs to practice ultra defensive driving when towing a boat-- extra following distance, use of turn signals long before making turns or lane changes, etc.

Wrong answer. While your definitely correct about everything else you said, I had brakes that would stop my truck dead in its tracks, on a trailer loaded to 6k, being towed by a 1993 dakota v8.

If your brakes are working properly you can stop almost as quickly with trailer as without.
Sometimes quicker.

well did you make it home with the boat? Slow and easy wins the race, hope everything went well and the boat is tucked away safely for the long cold winter.

Thanks for the well wishes. It really did turn out to be drama free
And I felt like a really big trucker doing it too ;)

I wouldn't sweat the mileage thing much, just take your time and don't push the truck too hard, it should be fine. Plan your stops and keep the speed down.

20 miles isn't far, just plan your route and allow extra time. Make sure all the tires have proper air pressure and that all the bearings have grease on the trailer if is sat all summer.
My truck has 124k on it, I'd take it anywhere. I've never owned a trailer with working brakes, every trailer I've owned had the brakes rusted away long before I got it and I never missed them.
