I have a inline 4 2+2 100 hp mercury outboard 1988. After putting on a new switch pack I finally got it running on all four like it should and it runs great. My question is. Is there any tricks to gaining a few mph without ruining the integrity of the motor? When im at full throttle my rpms read just below 5000. Probably around 4750 or 4800ish. What input do you guys have? Im hitting 41 mph on the gps alone fully loaded. Is that it or is there any room to improve. The boat is a 1988 17ft skeeter bass boat. Thanks in advance.-Jason

Propeller and setup are where most of your best gains will be. Yer a bit overpropped, or too deep, or both now.

hope it helps

Well, Jason, as John points out, you are not getting optimum rpm.

You might need a shorter pitch prop, but before you get into that you need to be sure of your setup is ideal.
Are you on a jackplate?
How high above the keel is the anti-ventilation plate?
Do you have PT&T and how are you setting it?

When those things are optimum, if you are still not getting at least 5500rpm at WOT, then go to the Prop Forum for advice on selecting a new prop.

Messing with the engine itself would be too much money and too little gain.

Your close to where it should be for the combo 17' 100hp 40mph..you won't get alot more and unless your a tournament pro..cruising to the fishing grounds at 30 and saving fuel is where it's at.
