How can I tell if my engine is hot. Should I install a thermostat. My engine is a 1985 75 HP Mercury. Also I also heard people say check the powerhead to see if its hot. What does that mean exactly. Same thing goes about checking the exhaust for heat.

If it dosn't have a thermostat, you should definitely install one since most wear occurs while the motor is warming up. As far as heat, you should be able to touch the head for several seconds without it burning your fingers too much. If it's too hot, you may need new thermostats or water pump impeller. You can get an actual measure of temperature with a pyrometer or "melt sticks" if necessary.

Touching the head: Does mean putting your hand on the top and sides of the motor with the cover on?

Hi Claude 75

Touching the head means laying your hand on motors cylinderhead, after you removed the hood and ran the motor. Place your hand between the spark plugs, on back of the motor. Stop it, so the flywheel wont hurt you ! You should be able to hold your hand 5 seconds without feeling pain from heat. It will feel hot though.
