I am trying to disconnect the steering cable form my old outboard. FOr some reason it doesnt wanna come off. seems pretty straight forward. can someone shed some light on this?
sure can, it's binding, and rust in the tilt tube. take a wooden dowel and hammer and drive it out. cable need to come straight out, not on an angle. may have to cut, with metal blade and sawsall.
I guess you have taken off that "arm the connects to the motor" and yes, it needs to come out straight, just a few taps/bangs on the end will see you right!
Hey Snake, before you start hammering, tru to loosen it with some penetrating oil. Use a pipe wrench to "rock" the steering rod front to back while spraying between the rod and the motor tilt tube. Eventually you should be able to loosen it enough to turn the wheel unti the steering rod is exposed. Now continue to clean it and grease it real well with a marine-grade grease.
