How do i get more hp/performance out of my '79 merc 50 4cyl with ????hrs on it?

I wanted to make sure I put as much info in the subject as possible due to the lack of info that other probies neglect. I also wanted to say that this site is unbeliveable. KUDOS to its creators/maintainers. I've been on this site for 2 hours so far and I have read so many good tips.<br /><br />Getting back to my Q. I don't have serial handy (boat in dry storage) but can get it soon if needed. I am new to boat mechanics and have been told that swapping carbs is one of the 1st and easiest ways to upgrade a motor. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. Can I put a Merc 75 carb in my 50? Should I invest in a rebuilt one or do it myself? After reading the other post I'm sure I could. <br /><br />Sorry about the long post.

There are really no modifications that can be done easily to that 44 cu. in. engine. A little porting, crushing the combustion chambers, opening reed stops a few thousands, loosen the engine up, running at little higher RPM. We do it on racing engines all the time, But it needs to be done profesionaly and I certainaly DON'T RECOMMEND IT on a fishing or n ski engine the cost far out weighs the preformce gain--Bob

I am new to boating as well. Performance relies on fuel conversion. You can use a lawnmower engine to move a freight car. It just won't go very fast. The designers and builders of the engine have taken into consideration fuel economy and performance. If you don't have the chicken you can't make the chicken salad. Still it is what gave birth to the hotrodder. ;D

Remove the engine and place it in the bed of your pickup truck. Drive to the local marine dealer of your choice and purchase a bigger outboard. Works every time.

Hazing sucks. I appreciate your reply. I think my biggest concern is making the motor run as it was intended to do. I got the boat a year ago from a friend and it was maintained extremely well. Winterized, kept lines/hoses clean, flushed motor as needed, garage kept, etc. I'm talkin' babied this thing. I just want to know if there is anything I can do to keep it that way or make it better.

Even though it was well kept, you probably should change the water pump impeller, check the condition of all the wireing, hoses, (They should all be soft enough to squeeze with your fingers),Change the lower unit oil, (use a synthetic lower unit oil, it will free up a bit of HP), even well kept engines have issues that need to be addressed just from age.

I had pretty much the same engine on a boat I use to own...I ran it like I stole it all the time and didnt take the best of care of it either and it was the best outboard I ever owned. It never put me down...changed the impeller every year and kept the foot grease checked is all I ever did to it. <br /><br />I sold it 4 years ago and I still see it running the river and have talked to the guy since i sold it to him and he says he hasn't had a minutes problem out if it and its a 73 model engine! ! !
