getting back to the orignional question.....
there are two kinds of cap joints.....a "shoe box" type where the cap fits over the hull like a shoe box.
and a flange joint. the flange joint just has the cap sitting on top of the glass. its a real pita to get off, as there is a fiberglass layer bon the inside between the hull and cap.
if you have a flange joint....i would do the resto without removing the cap.
if you have a cap joint.......no worries, follow woodies advice, he has you on the right track.
check your transom well......and KNOW its good or replace it!
