Well finally I have my project boat in the water. Only thing is the shift cable on my 50 hp esl 1972 johnson is tight? Is there a way to make it slide easier? The last one was bad and broke yesterday, replaced it with the spare, no more spares!!! Is there a way to lube it and what should I use? Baby oil in a syringe?

If the first one broke, make sure that the cable is the real problem. With the cable not connected, do the control levers move free and easy?

While the engine is idling and tied to the dock, can you shift the engine in and out of gear at the engine cable connection point?

Is the cable route from the shift box to the engine proper without any sharp bends or kinks?

IF the cable route is ok and your sure its just an old cable you could lube it by injecting a penetrating oil like crc and or liquid wrench.

Find a short piece of hose that fits over the cable end. Adapt or shim to have the other end of this hose go onto an oil can or a funnel.

Tie the funnel and cable so it is the highest point and pour the mixture of CR & Marvel mystery oil into the funnel so gravity will cause the mix to enter the cable.

This works better if you can pump our use positive pressure to get the oil to flow into the cable.

All this work to save an old cable that costs about $40. The other down side is the cable might just freeze up again, Penetrating oil works to free up stuff, not keep it free.

There used to be a can of lubricant specifically for motorcycle cables.
You could attach it to the end of the throttle or brake cable and press the button.
It was a bit messy, but got the job done quite well.

Not sure if it's still available, or what the name was. Street bikes switched to hydraulic brake lines many years ago (most have, anyway).

Perhaps a search for motorcycle lubricants would yield some results.
Good luck mate.

I will try to move it at the engine without cable attached. but it's an old cable in really good shape and I not sure where to find a new one?
