how do i match an outboard to a boat

I have a 30 hp Mariner on a 16'Big Jon and I want to know Will it work on an 18' john boat or will it be underpowered

There should not be enough difference in weight in the two boats to matter for a 30hp. That is alot of beef. Just make sure that the transom heights are the same.

Nathans rite...long as the weight is close to the same...BUT, if that 18 footer has 200-300 more pounds..might be a bit of a slug by the time you load your standard gear and persons. Most jons of that size in MY area use 60 HP or bigger.

LSW,<br /><br />Go with 85-100% (not over) of the hp. capacity max. You won't be dissapointed with that.
