how do i properly test outboard

I have a 90 hp Mercury, i am unable to to test the engine in the water, i am restoring the boat and don't want to risk it NOT floating, i have the "rabbit ears" but i want to make sure i do this correctly. I know it is best to test it while is in the water but i have to make due with what i have. I don't want to start on the boat itself until the motor is actually running. If some knows some quick instructions to doing this correctly it would be appreciated. i searched the repairing threads and didn't see anything.


Thanks, i changed the spark plugs, got fresh fuel in, and battery works. Engine will crank and turn but won't fire up, any suggestions?

There is two grates on each side at the bottom of the outboard,slide your muffs over them from the front side,turn on water hose and crank it up. Make sure it is peeing water after it cranks,that will tell you your water pump is working. Good luck with it.

Take a compression test. If it has good, even compression, you are 1/2 way good. The other 1/2 is if the gears are good. There is no way to test unless you have a test tank and test wheel.

Success, a little tune up, about an hour and a half of sweat and the motor was running! Thanks for the advice.
