I have a boat with a 5.7 gi and a dpe drive and im not sure how the back of the motor is attached to the transom since there is no rear motor mounts. I have front motor mounts loose and everything else unhooked and motor still seems stuck.

figured it out! drive was off. this style drive did not have splines that went right from drive into motor coupler, there is an intermediate shaft that goes through the transom. took 6 bolts out from the outside of the boat and the whole intermediate shaft and motor came out together. i hear if there isnt enough room to do this then u can just unbolt the bell housing. but there are no rear motor mounts. thanks!

1) Carefully check the bearing in the flywheel cover (The bell housing looking thing)...replace them if at all suspect. Look for the procedure online here, or at the bayliner owner's club. You need to custom grind (No bid deal really) a set of needlenose pliers to fit into the snap rings to get the job done.

2) When you stick the engine back in, there is an alignment procedure. There are 3 'tabs' on the flywheel cover. One on top, two at the approx 9 and 3 o'clock positions. You bolt the 6 doughnut bolts up loosely, then adjust the front motor mounts so that all three are about the same away form the transom fitting. This is normally done with a wedge. Slide it in and mark the wedge with a pen. Move to the next mount....continue shifting, raising and lowering until all 3 match very closely.

alrighty. it sounds pretty easy to align anyway. thanks!

You do not have an engine that get aligned with an alignment bar, and I have a feeling that is what mxcobra was thinking, as he has a Mercruiser.

To easily remove the engine from a Volvo with your type of drive, all you have to remove is the upper gear box, like this. Then disconnect the hose where it attaches to the drive.
No need to remove the whole drive. That's a lot of work.

With the upper gear box off, you will have plenty of room to remove the clamp ring. Just remove the 6 bolts holding the clamp ring in place, and you are done on the outside of the boat. The ring will pop out of the way when you lift the engine.

Now just disconnect the engine and lift it out flywheel housing and all.

To replace the primary drive shaft bearings in the flywheel housing, there is a link below for a .pdf file on replacing them.

I do the alignment once in order to confirm it is right. It will pick up sagging motor mounts etc. Do it once for the piece of mind...like Don says the Mercruiser/Volvo SX procedure is different and much more critical than this.

This 'easy allignment' is one thing we gain from not having a gimbal bearing/power trim.

motor is in and checked alignment. all good! i think it was easier to pull the whole drive than to mess with slitting the outdrive, however i do hate putting these drives on! just have to put exhaust on and fire her up now!
