How do I remove the retainer on the drive shaft to remove the water pump?

This question had to of been answered somewhere but I can't find it. I just got a 1985 Force 50hp motor. When I bought it water was coming out the exhaust. The next day on the lake, it overheated within 2 minutes and was chugging like crazy. I took off the lower unit to inspect the water pump and the impeller is worn cracking and it will not rotate in the housing. I think I just need a new impeller.

I tried removing the old one and I can't get the retainer off of the drive shaft. Do I just tap it out? Do I have to buy a new one ? The repair manual mentions nothing about it. Thanks for your help.

How about a pic? I don't ever remember a retainer in the impeller unless you are talking about the ring that holds the grease boot.
