How do I set high idle on 1985 Force 85hp?

I went to start my new-to-me 1985 85hp Force on my Bayliner. I was surprised to find that I couldn't find a high idle lever/control like is on my Evinrude control.

The Bayliner control has the "pull" feature that when the control is pulled out an inch or so, disconnects the shift lever and leaves the throttle connected. Bingo! I think, here is the high idle control. WRONG! The Force has a lock out feature that prevents throttle movement when the engine is in neutral.

So, how do I raise the idle when the engine is cold and warming up like I can on my Evinrude without being in gear?

by pulling out the throttle lever and advancing it forward that is the high idle for colder starts, it keeps it in neutral but increases the throttle a bit, but no, it won't let you go full throttle. you should be able to pull it out and forward a bit to increase the idle at start just like the rude had the seperate lever.

There is so little movement in the Pull position that I didn't even bother to try starting it. I'll give it a try tomorrow and see how things go. I guess if there is no throttle response in the pull possiton that throttle linkage may be adjusted wrong.

I'll check the manual I have and see what the "link and synch" specs are too.

Thanks for the response!

Mark.

Yeah, it's new to me also on my 89' Force 125hp, but I literally have to grab the handle top, & bottom, with both hands to pull it away from the box so I can have some throttle in neutral.

yup, gotta pull it a bit firmly, I just pull at the pivot point then push forward, it won't go all the way, just enough to speed up the idle for cold start

On my 1984, 85 HP engine, the throttle pulls out only about 1/4 of an inch.
I think your first post said about an inch. Maybe the screw under the cap
is loose, not letting things work correctly.

I get about 2000 rpm at start up and I back off some until it warms for a few seconds or so.
Yup, sometimes it take two men and a small boy to pull it out.

Good luck,

Mike

I took the whole thing apart trying to see what was wrong (duh). Anyway, if you want to take the control off, pry off the cap on the lever, remove the center screw. Then remove the lever from the spline shaft. Then pry the larger square cover off. Now the tricky part.... The four outermost screws attach the square plate to the boat with nuts and washer on the backside. BUT they are a bit** to remove until you remove the rest of the control first. So next step is to remove the three inner screws (two hold the center tab, the other below, and all three are closer to the center than the other 4 corner screws). Now remove the one stainless screw about a foot aft on the padded wall. You can now push the control free of the pannel (it can now be pulled out, and leave that square plate bolted to the pannel). Then reach in (from the rear or below) and hold the nuts of the four remaing screws with a plyers and unscrew. Now the plate comes off.

Lube up the control, lube up the plastic sleeve (you will know what I mean when you get it apart) and re-assemble.

Take note these controls are Japanese made and take METRIC STAINLESS steel screws & nuts.

Everyone who posted saying it is hard to pull out, remove the lever as per above, and press some marine grease around the splined shaft and into the plastic sleeve it rides in. That should make it pull out nice. Also grease up the linkage on the back side of the lever and spray some wd40 into the red button then some oil to make it press in smoooooth. A simple and needed tune up for the control.

BTW, my control was only held in with one of four screws, the control lever was loose, and everything needed lubrication. It is solid, smooth and only a tad of play in the linkages.

Thanks for everyones input.

Enjoy!

Today I fixed a carb problem (broken float) and got to test the high idle control. It worked great! And like someone mentioned earlier, the control only pulls out a 1/4 inch or so, not 1 inch like I said.
