How do i set spark advance on 1960 johnson 40 hp

I have put in new points,condensers, coils, carb kit,fuel pump working good,<br /> I have also put on a electric starter to make things easer,Motor will start run a short time<br />then kind of bucks and stops ,it will start every time but only run a few sec,<br />Any ideas way this won't run right?<br />thanks river run

Assuming point and plug gaps are right and the fuel system is clean, it might be your fuel mix. I think your manual should recommend about 30:1 or something in that range (24:1?) -- maybe experiment with 35:1 or 40:1 with fresh fuel and TCW-3 oil. Mix a half gallon at a time until you know what mix is right.

Thanks oldboat1<br />Points set at ,020 plugs at ,030<br />gas oil mix 40to 1 with tcw-3 oil fresh gas too<br />Low spead set at1 1/2 turns out,high spead out 3/4<br />turn out,It wont run long enought to set low spea <br />thanks river run

Go to your local boat store and buy a copy of Clymer's Evinrude/Johnson Repair Manual, 1956-1972.<br /><br />This manual has every possible tuning and repair advice you need, plus great wiring schematics. It explains the spark advance with pictures.

My '58 had a cutout switch under the flywheel that went bad and is no longer available. OMC advised me to remove it and hook the wires to each other and bypass it. I don't know if your model year had it or not. Get the manual as it will save you a ton of time and cash.
