Re: How do you address your parents, how do your children address you?

Mom + Dad The family down the street had 12, children. They were forced to say yes mam, no mam, or yes sir, no sir - to their par-
ents! I thought that was creepy - still do. Many of them went wayward? I say sir, and mam to other peoples parents - not mine. Those
poor children grew up in a boot camp - too much discipline, stifling. They couldn't wait to go wild.

Thanks, all. It is gratifying to find that what I call common (no, compulsive) courtesy is alive and well in the 21st century. :)

It's Mom and Pop, and when I answer one of their yes or no questions it's always followed by Sir or Ma'am.

If I had kids they would be doing the same... or they'd be picking their teeth up off the kitchen floor!

All of my nieces and nephews were raised the same way.

This respect was instilled into me and my brothers at a very young age... when we picked a couple of our teeth up off the kitchen floor!

This is pretty much how it was for me and im only 34.
My kids are the same way. Its mom ,dad ,grandmaw or paw any one else depends on there rank.

I still use Mom and my Mom has always called me Robert....... never Bob which is what I really use.
Same here! And she always corrected anyone who called me anything other than Robert. Dad was always Dad, too. Both gone for a while, though.

Mom and dad.

Mom doesn't always respond to "mom".

If she sees me, as me, she responds to mom.
If she doesn't recognize me, or thinks I am dad, she doesn't respond.

As her dementia gets worse, we will probably have to address her by her name more often.

I have always thought it was very weird/rude calling parents by their first name
I call my folks mom and dad and my kids call me daddy

Re: How do you address your parents, how do your children address you?

I'll throw a youngin perspective in to this, well younger at 28 and all.

I call my parents mom and dad, strangely enough all my friends feel like were all family and also refer to my parents as mom and dad, and only mom and dad(they used to be involved as band parents and school functions so they are used to playing parental units to my friends...). They don't seem to mind, infact my mom wears the title as a badge of pride, and introduces my friends as her extended child (name)...

I always show respect and refer to my friends parents by Mr. Or Mrs, tho as were getting older many of them have asked me to level the playing field and use their first names. It was weird at first, but I've since gotten used to it. Tho I still occasionally find myself using Mr. Mrs. outta pure habit. I don't see a problem as long as I'm doing it respectfully.

Now how about I switch it up a bit... How do you refer to your significant others/spouses parents? Mom? Dad? I only have one of those and will only refer to my biological parents by that title, Mr and Mrs seems a little childish to me, especially if I'm thinking about marrying their daughter, and first names still seem awkward to me. This girl was my High school sweetheart, tho we split for several years before finding our way back to each other I just sorta carry over the Mr Mrs cause it's what I know. I do occasionally use her fathers first name if were hanging out, but always as respectfully as I can. Okay so I don't really have set rules on this except for Mom and Dad are reserved for my folks only.

My kids all call me Dad, their friends (the ones I know well, call me Heinz), my mom is always Mom, my dad when he was alive was "Papa", first stepdad was dad(I was much younger) but the other stepdads were by their first name. When my grandparents were still around, always Opa and Oma - German for grandpa and grandma - all family from the old country, we were first gen. born here.

Re: How do you address your parents, how do your children address you?

I am about at the tail end of the baby-boomer gen here, and it's always been mom and dad. My feeling is that these are terms of endearment and respect. I see there is a new comedy series on TV called Suburgatory where the teen aged daughter calls her father by his first name and I just grit my teeth and bear it. It seems to me that to do that is a form of self-emancipation and a method of distancing oneself from their parents as a form of self declaration of maturity, independence and equality. At my age now, I totally feel mature, independent and at least equal to the successful stature they held when they were at the age I am now.... But I will still only refer to them as mom and dad. Again, out of love, respect and fond memories, since they have passed many years ago. (ok...my opinion, but you asked, and thanks for asking, because it is a very interesting thread!
