I have an old chrysler 35 hp outboard. I just got it running and it was running real smooth. It all of a sudden starting kind of flooding out. It runs kind of rough and shoots out a lot of unburned fuel. I have cleaned the carburator inside and out and checked the float but all is ok. Is it possible that it has jumped time? If so, how do I check and adjust it?

After motor has cooled off does it run good again? I doubt it has jumped time. It could be when your engine gets hot that your stators or some other component in your electrical system is crapping out. If it went to crap and does this even when cold I would think fuel system. Check your spark plugs. Verify that they both look about the same with some carbon or oil on them. I would rebuild the carb and fuel pump. I know you mentioned you cleaned the carb but the rubber parts inside are attacked by the gas and get hard. Also replace all the fuel line and clamps. Check the idle mixture screw and make sure there are no grooves on it and that it has a nice round tip. Pull plugs and ground tips and check spark. A blue spark is good. A yellow spark is bad. Buy L82C champion spark plugs and gap them at 30 thousands.

Chances are you have some old gas that has water or varnish or gum. Even though carb looks clean there could be a small spec of something in the idle circuits. Take carb apart and spray down with carb cleaner and let it soak for a couple of hours. Use thin piece of wire to clean out small holes and blow everything out with compressed air. Reinstall carb with new carb kit. If float needle has a rubber tip reset float to 1/2 inch inverted and 7.8 inch upright. Fuel pump diaphram should be replaced every other year. Here again it may look okay but the alcohal in the gas is hard on them. The fuel pump kit comes with gasket to replace the fuel seat valves. You can replace the one that has two screws holding it in but do not mess with the press fit ones unless you want to buy new ones. they are tough to get out without breaking.

Napa carb kit is 18-7037 and fuel pump kit is 18-7806. Total cost for both kits is around 25 bucks. While you are there you can get new plugs and fuel line. If you mainly troll you can use L86C plugs. They burn hotter.

Good luck and welcome to iboats

Thank you very much for the information. This is my first time to use this board and it was very helpful. I also noticed that you are a Senior Chief Petty Officer. Are you in the Navy or Coast Guard? I was a Petty Officer Third Class in the Coast Guard from 90 to 94. Thanks again for you help

No I am not in the military anymore. Notice you are a cadet. It is a new ranking system they use on Iboats. Used to be a captian and would become admiral at 1000 posts but they changed that. Now you need to be older then God to be an admiral.

Your problem could be electrical but I doubt it. The gas system is usually the culprit and it is also a lot cheaper to do then the electrical. If the rebuilding the fuel system dont work the next step is troubleshooting the electrical. Do you have a manual. If not you should get one I boats sells them. I hear the syloc is good. I have clymor and the factory manual. Both have been good to me. Here is a link for a manual manual

As far as I know they dont make L4J plugs anymore. NAPA and Autozone up here says they cross referenced to L82C. I have been using the L82C now for 2 years and they work great. Plus they are only 2 bucks a piece. Fuel pump number at napa is 18-7806. The 18-7037 is a carb rebuild kit. Also available at NAPA. Carb kit is 15 bucks and the fuel pump kit is 9 bucks

Rsharer. I dont know what size chrysler you have. The plugs and the rebuild kits work on 35 45 and 55 hp chryslers
