I don't know what price you guys are paying, but over here, it's just gone to au$1.17 / litre, which roughly works out to us$3.5 / gal.

Re: How do you conserve fuel?

Like brother chris, and SBN I can absorb the additional fuel cost. The difference is I am choosing NOT to. I see no need to further pad the pockets of the oil companies. So I have modified my driving habits and am thinking about down sizing from my V-10 equipped truck.

A few things

cook outside - for every watt you put into your house it takes 3 watts to take it out. So I move the toaster oven, fryer etc into the garage during the summer and cook as much as I can on the grill.

Remove all the junk from your car trunk

for those with 5 speeds shift into neutral to stop dont downshift, wears the brakes faster but uses less fuel

SSmayfloat As far as the van and the AC is concerned you may want to do your own test - many cars are designed in wind tunnels so driving with the windows open is just as bad as driving with the windows open because of the increased in drag...

I might start over-inflating my tires. Seems to me that even if the ties wear out faster it's still cheaper in the long run.

Re: How do you conserve fuel?

My boat has only been out about three or four times this summer. My truck has been doing a lot of sitting. I drive with a light foot. I take the car instead of the truck more. I have no AC in the house or truck. I only have a 35 horse and 15 horse on my boats. Been trying to plan ahead more when shopping to save trips to town.

How many MPGs can you get out of overinflating your tires? How much should you overinflate them?

Re: How do you conserve fuel?

I bought my epoxy from Raka instead of the higher price company to repair my boat.
That gave me fifty bucks that I could spend on gas .

Re: How do you conserve fuel?

carpool with my sweetie in her little 4 banger, leave the 'burban in the driveway as much as i can stand. stinks paying for a car to gather dust, looks good though. :|

i haven't gone out as much on the boat, working around the house more instead. just ripped out an old single paned sliding glass door that wouldn't shut tight for a new double paned. i have a few more projects to increase my home's efficiency.

coincidentally, we started going to a warmer lake...just happens that the swimming spot is also about 10-15 miles closer by boat than the other lake. the tow is a few miles longer to get there though. truck gets better mileage than the boat.

i don't have to cut back but why toss the dollars in the drain? i'd rather keep em than give em away. prices for everything are going to go up as the cost is passed on.

Re: How do you conserve fuel?

Hey Cranky, I took my wifes car from 30 psi to 40psi. She has said the car seems to coast better and gets about 35 more miles from a tank full. So she is getting about 2 gallons worth of savings for the air pressure being increased.

I'm not worried about tire wear. My friend hauls cars to the shredder and has lots of tires to choose from. SInce I do his boat work, I get em for nothing. He even has the changer and balancer.

My personal feeling on this would be to bump the timing back a bit, (Dont know what that entails with the newer engines). Also I know you are not running WOT if ever so the problem of detonation may not be an issue. Also I would drop a couple pitches on the prop so you dont lug the engine at all. Hey a better holeshot isnt bad is it.

If I thought you where a speed demon and running WOT all the time, I would never recommend it.

Yea LD, no WOT here pal.
74 mph is quite fast enough for me thanks you.

It is suppose to run on 92 or better and if something were to happen to the engine before it's out of warranty and they could find out I had put in 87 or so, they might want to buck up against me and the warranty.

I saw this thing today which could be the answer for smaller more efficient vehicle but still looks cool, matter of fact, it's the coolest thing I've seen. http://www.carver.nl/
With a 660cc engine that would run a long time on a gallon of gas.

I'm a little worried about this country when I read some of these drastic measures.

Come on people, we're all BOAT OWNERS here. We're talking about blowing up our tires and what not. It's ridiculous.

If we REALLY wanted to save fuel, we'd turn off these dad blamed computers, sell the boats and hunker down. But, we ain't going to do any of those things. This is NOT the depression our parents knew. Not even CLOSE.

So, stop listening to the media and go enjoy what you enjoy. You'll budget for it.

There's not a damned thing we can do about it so just go out and catch a fish, or two.

As Ladyfish said, go drift fishing. But I think Ladyfishes trolling was done at 5500 RPM and 43 MPH. ;) :D

Cranky -

I wouldn't way overinflate the tires. Mine run at about 30 and I would bump it up to 35. Doing this the center of the tread will wear out faster - But my first set of tire on my truck lasted 5 years and they still had lots of tread - the rest of the tire starting falling apart.

I haven't tried it yet but I know if the front tires are underinflated (I ran over a nail) then my mileage drops from around 20 to around 12.

DJ - were talking about simple thing that save gas which saves money. If my tires did blow out then your right - It would be a net loss.

I havnt done anything except raise my prices slightly on my guide trips, and dont go any farther than I have to. I do some of the shopping now on my way home though so the wife doesnt have to run into town so much. Its only about $3.50 for her to come in though, so I could give a rats A*Z. I do have to take her to lunch though if she comes in.

I dont want to rain on your parade but in the UK where fuel prices have been high for decades we just drive smaller cars .I run a 1.6L Fiat and a 2.0L Nissan and gently driven will do 35-40mpg of 8miles per Litre both will tow my boat and do anything I want plus top 100mph when required bigger is not always best!
