Looking closer at the pics I agree in principle with how that should work but the op is right there is no room to slide the shaft. I'm not to familiar with those but it does look like something may be out of place.

Sure looks it should slide over just fine to me. I have the identical winch. That's what I do.

You lift the small handle on the left side of the photo. This will lift out of a locking groove on the shaft. Then you pull out the cranking handle until the shaft slides into position with the locking groove that is now outside the frame under the locking lever. Let the lever lock into the groove. This will keep the second siamesed small gear (that is now not engaged) in mesh with the intermediate gear. Notice that the second shaft carries the intermediate shaft, the anti-reverse lock lever, AND a small gear in constant mesh with the drum gear. NOW, when the intermediate gear is meshed, it turns the second shaft and the small gear for a double reduction.

ALL shafts need to be cleaned and lubricated well. For the first time, you may need to tap the shaft over with a small hammer and use some penetrating oil.
