Re: how do you salt water guys do it?

I only buy quality stainless steel hardware. The boat gets a hose down after each outing, a quick run on the muffs to flush the motor, and washed and waxed about once a week while at the shore.

There are still a few outside fittings that are not stainless (like the bow navagation light) that will be replaced sooner or later with stainless. Otherwise, the salt doesn't affect the boat as much as I thought.

It the boat has chrome plated zinc parts, they quickly become sacrificial anodes. ;) Hence, stainless steel hardware.

Oh, and tinned marine wire is mandatory.

But you can improve on that by moving to a place where the water isn't iced over six months of the year! ;)

Believe me, the water rarely ever freezes over in the NY long island bays other than sometimes in January and February.

true that only happens Jan-Feb and only when the temps are below 20 degrees for an extended period. Salt water freezes at 28* F...The harbor has not even frozen over every winter but from Dec to March its pretty dreary around here...

How/why do we put up with salt water for our boats?

1) An orange sunset on beautiful teal green water with LED's on the back can't be beat

2) We have Oceans, inlets, rivers, tides, waves, and sea spray. You have (usually) brown water.

3) Ever taste the salt spray on your lips? No? Too bad...

4) The size fish you catch and eat...we use for bait.

5) Open water diving

Please....add to the list...

Speaking of the East coast, you can go from Texas to Maine in a 24' boat. :)

One more...

Ever been 25 miles off of the coast of the Keys? The water is so blue it's actually purple. Not a tree or a house or another boat in sight. Drop your lines in the water and hope to God you don't spoil a perfect day by catching one of those stupid 45-pound Mahi.

Its easier to float in salt water!

Sea shells on the beach.

Sun bleached drift wood.

Sand dunes.

Light houses.

Clams, crabs, etc.

Tides.

Philster,
Havn't seen'em since I left the North... I'm just a dumb kid from Brooklyn!!! I lived in Ocean City Maryland for almost four years, and Manhattan for 7 years before, and 7 years after the Military. I was in the South with the Military and then came back to marry my wife... Yes, I got myself a "Georgia Peach!!!". Do you prefer Herr's or Grandma Utz? I do miss the Old Bay Potato Chips... If you're ever Down South, Philster, look me up.
