How do you test a Stator

searched the forum and cant find anywhere that tells how to see if a stator is working up to par. Battery didn't seem to be keeping a charge charged it same issue. replaced it with new battery, the new battery didn't seem to have the umph to turn the motor over. If i've been told correctly the ststor controls the battery's charge like the alternator am I correct? if so how do I check it. 1986 force 85 hp
seems like most of the time people ask about the stator people mistake it for the starter.

There should be 3 sets of wires on your engine from the stator. 2 sets go to the ignition side, 1 set to the rectifier. If your having trouble with the charging, but not with starting and running, the ignition side of the stator should be good. Pull the leads off the rectifier and test for resistance. Be sure you disconnect the batter when doing this. The Clymer manual has the specs, and I don't have it here and can't remember off the top of my head. It could, also, possibly be your rectifier.

I highly recommend getting a Clymer manual for the motor. Cost about $30 and is worth every penny. I had the Seloc and the Clymer blows it out of the water by a long shot. These engines aren't tough to work on when you have the Clymer, at least not for the issues I've had, which are very few for a 20+ yr motor.

Normally its the rectifier gone bad. Especially if you ever hooked the battery up backwards even for a split second. Or caused a lot of sparks somewhere. Your manual will tell you how to test it and if you don't have one an OEM manual is by far the best (and most expensive).

You say the new battery has trouble turning it over then there might be something else wrong.
Do a compression test and a spark test.If that's ok.Then take the starter apart and check the contacts.
If that's ok then take a battery reading while the motor is off.Then when it's running and then when it's running over 3000rpm.What voltage is it reading.If there is no change then the stator would be suspect.
You need a good peak reading multimeter to accurately test the stator.J
