How Does Clutch Dog Ratchet?

I just replaced the shaft housing on my M140A2 and have everything back together ready for pressure tests.

I checking the shifting I realized that while in forward or reverse I cannot turn the prop any direction. In neutral it spins free.

I'm trying to figure out how the mechanizim allows the ratcheting in the first place. That may point me in the right direction.

Or, can anyone tell me it the Tohatsu M140A2 is designed with a ratcheting clutch?

In forward gear, can you rotate the prop one way and not the other?

Do you have a parts diagram or a service manual with an exploded view?

Looks small. let me know if you can read it.

I would imagind in order to slip the dog teeth would have to be chamfered on one side. They are square.

Guru. do you know if this is a design issue? I took it apart again, poured over the manual and judging by the parts and mech. I do not see how it is possible to ratchet CCW in gear.

For what its worth, rotating the crack shaft produces desired results in all three settings, F/N/R.

It's a dog clutch mate, It is either in or out and shouldn't ratchet
You should just bang it into gear and not gently slide it in or out or you will chamfer the dogs
What your'e describing sounds perfectly normal to me

The clutch dog for the 140A is not intended to ratchet.

Thanks guys that is what I figured. I was getting this one confused with my Merc OB.

Again, looking at the parts and how they go together, there is no way for it to ratchet.

After figuring this out last night I ended up just finishing the job. Now ready for some tuna!!!
