How does my gear case look?

Took apart my gearcase today on my 72 6HP Johnson. I found a few small shavings on the magnet, and I saw a little wear on the clutch dogs. I took pictures of the important stuff. I think everything looks all right (besides the old seals).

I had to take it apart because I am converting this motor from long shaft to short shaft as I am rebuilding the motor.

Is this clutch dog OK to reuse? I think it is, just want to make sure.

How does the rest of it look?

All looks good to me. Those shavings are caused by shifting into gear to slowly. When you pull the shifter, do so with a firm, quick movement. People try to "ease" the shifter into gear and all that does is chew up the dog.

I beg to differ.
The clutch dog has rounded edges,as does the gear.It might work for awhile but then it will try to jump out of gear. I have taken this set up to my local tool a die worker and they put eleven to fourteen degree cut back on the dog faces. or a used set will cost you $130 or so, if you can find them.

Clutch dog looks worn. I'd replace it. If that's the forward gear, it's pretty worn also. How is the other gear? I'm not sure if you can interchange forward and reverse gears on that motor. If you can, I'd reverse the gears and get a new clutch dog.

Re: How does my gear case look?

The wear was caused by the previous owner. I got it with a sailboat I bought, and started off with minor repairs, and turned this into a rebuild project and shaft conversion (it's a long shaft currently).

Those two pictures show the forward gear and forward clutch dogs. The reverse dogs look similar. And no, the forward and reverse gears are not interchangeable. I think the residual gear oil is making it look worse than it is. Aside from the rounded off areas, the edges are normal and square. The rounded off edge only entends about 1mm in depth or less. No grooves are worn into any surface, and I have seen pictures here that have shown dogs and gears in bad shape.

Just looked at the gears in hand again, and confirmed it, no grooves, and the only wear besides the slightly rounded corners is light scuffing. The edges and sides are square.

It is sort of hard to tell from the angle of the pictures and the oil. But from what I can see, I'd use them. It looks like chipping of the edges only (??) If you shift properly, they will probably last a long time. However, nothing lasts forever and some day you may have to reckon with it. But not today.

That's right F R, the leading edge corners are the only bit thats rounded off, the sides of the dogs and gears look normal and square (where the gear and dog "mesh").

Thank you all very much. Especially now that I only need new seal and a driveshaft for the gearcase! And don't worry, I'll shift it properly. :)

Thanks again!

The clutch dog looks reasonably rounded to me also. Is that the best side? Do you have a clearer pic of it?

Re: How does my gear case look?

Looks to be rust on the detente screw and the shift cage, which means that water probably sat in there for some time.
I'd only be worried about the bearing at the front of the gearcase, and whether it has any rust.

I've seen a whole lot worse run for a long long time.

When I drained the case, it was full of gear oil, no water at all, and no signs of water intrusion other than the detent screw and shift fork.

The forward bearing looks OK, and rolls smooth.

I say that because I opened up the L/U on my '75 6HP to replace all seals because it was taking in water, and it had no rust at all, fortunately. I am guessing that since I knew it was leaking and changed the oil more frequently until I did the reseal

Should be fine then. That surface rust is no big deal on its own.
