How far could you take a 2stroke 35HP outboard?

With enough gas, how far out to sea do you think you could take a 35HP outboard on a 14foot boat with a Vhull , with a weight of about 500-700 lbs given ideal weather ? Or is there too much chop/swell for a motor like that to handle on any given day?

Weather permitting you could go as far as you wanted.

A good rule of thumb is don't go any farther then you are willing to swim back. Or any farther then you would want to fight your way back from if the wind / swell kicks up.
I run my 15" tinny w/ 25hp up to 3-4 miles off shore, when the forecast is favorable.

The limiting factor is: How big are your gogliones? (OO) Sea and weather are fickle and you may find yourself sweating a good bit, trying to get to port in a blow.

There's people out this way who take their wave runners about 35 miles off coast to the catalina island and back. i'd imagine they take a good beating sometimes depending on the water / wind on such as small pwc.. then again a 2 stroke wave runner motor is designed for more performance power than a 2 stroke outboard on a boat, i'd assume , depending on the size / weight, etc.

14ft V-hull tinny with a 25-35hp 2-stroke is standard fare for kelp bed runs down here in San Diego (1/4 to 1/2 mile offshore). Wouldn't go more than 1.5 to 2 miles out with that myself, though.

I'd be more concerned about the size of the boat rather than the motor

All the way out to the site of the marine disaster.

used to have 3 fuel tanks in a 14' boat with a 50hp merc. would go all the way around door county in Wisconsin. that was about 100 miles of boating. however never more than 2 miles from shore.

its all about the weather, size of the boat, and the skill of the guy captaining the craft.

If you lived in Florida I would tell you to go offshore 200 yards and sit through a thunderstorm. Then you'll answer your own question.

+1. The rule of thumb is to use 1/3 of tank to get to your destination, 1/3 tank to get back, 1/3 for emergencies. While there are folks that will take jon boats out to oil rigs in the Gulf, I wouldn't recommend going much past the horizon. Make sure your motor is in tip-top shape and that you have at least one other means of propulsion on board. You can't/won't/don't want to paddle several miles home against wind, waves and tide. Above all else, remember to check the weather, then check it again, then check it again and again.

Re: How far could you take a 2stroke 35HP outboard?

what is it about Catalina Island that inspires people to lose there critical thinking ability?

As someone said, it's not the motor, it's first, the skills and experience of the captain and second, the boat. Horsepower andlength are irrelevant; a 17' ocean kayak is safer than a 17' bowrider offshore. An 8' jetski is not an 8' jon boat. My 13' whaler would make it when your 13' V hull tinny would be on the bottom.

I think that in a small boat you should always be 20 minutes from safe harbor so that you can survive if a storm kicks up. How far your boat goes in 20 minutes is your leash. And remember, "shore" is not the same as "safe." Even the lake boaters know that.

There is no such thing as "ideal weather" when you are an hour from shore.

Nothing wrong with boat adventures. Have a buddy boat* and try it. Use the "thirds" rule and have back-up. However, in your case, a 35 mile open ocean crossing in a 14' boat is not an adventure; it's a mistake, pure and simple.

*something big enough to carry your boat or tow it on a plane.

It is the 1950s song: 26 miles across the sea, Santa Catalina ia a waiting for me. Santa Catalina, the island of romance---- Google it!

Re: How far could you take a 2stroke 35HP outboard?

I have seen boats of that size fishing off the coast of NJ. Not an issue on a calm day. Probably more important than distance offshore is distance from inlet. Also, inlet is usually much rougher than ocean, depending on tide and wind direction. I have seen tides run fast enough to plane that boat, without much land speed, when running against them. You need to check local conditions and see what makes sense.

Are you just joyriding? fishing? Why do you want to go in the ocean?
