How high above fuel tank can filter be mounted?

I was reading another post and decided to pose this question. I am thinking of installing a fuel water seperator (in the splashwell).
How high above the fuel tank can the filter assembly be placed?
I have seem them installed in the splash wells but never thought about the height. Anyone have any idea?
I am seriously thinking about moving mine out of the bilge and up where I can get to it easly for service. Whoever rigged my boat apparently mounted the assembly through the hole plate(8"X16")in the engine splash well before the engine was installed and it is very hard to service w/o fuel spill in the bilge. Everything is backwards because they were standing outside of the boat facing the transom while doing the work.

--------------------
Gary

Theoretically it shouldn't make any odds where you put it as long as the fuel can pump OK and it's the right way up. Wherever you put it the fuel still has to go through it...

I've always seen them somewhere between the bottom of the fuel tank and the engine. My current one is just along the natural line of the fuel line as it moves from the built in tanks to the engine - on the transom, above the tank, but below the engine. Previous I/O had it mounted in engine compartment, approximately mid-height of engine (in other words, below the carb, again, somewhere between the tank and the carb). I don't know if that helps, but with an outboard you've got a lot of options, I'd think.

OH, PS: I'd bet a new unit would come with instructions, including answering the question you have. You're re-insalling an existing unit, so you may or may not have them. They're often available on line, or if it were me, I'd go to local boat store that sells the unit and just ask them (a) if they can advise you or (b) if you can take a look at and/or photocopy the instructions of one if they have it in stock. Good luck.

D. You're right, I need to swing by West Marine or Boaters World and take a look. I probably could have paid for a good Racor with all the filters I have changed just as a precaution.
I just thought someone might have an answer. I posted it on the tail of another thread over on the Whaler board, but response there, which really does not surprise me. Sure will be happy to see Salmon fishing open back up in July so I can enjoy the boat more.

Re: How high above fuel tank can filter be mounted?

I went into West Marine today and talked w/mngr, he had no idea. Told me I should talk w/a mechanic. We discussed the diaphram pump and its ability to suck fuel to the outboard, the relocation of the filter would be about the same height as the bottom carb. I also run my 15hp Honda kicker from the same filter, I think I would be more concerned at this point about the Honda being able to get fuel. More food for thought.

Racor offers technical support on their web site. I'd bet other manufacturers do as well.
