How is Living in Dallas?

I was raised 2 hours away from Dallas in Tyler, Tx and I currently live in Rochester, NY. I am looking at a job opening down there and I am wondering how is it to live there? Is it expensive, what are the nicer areas to live, where should I avoid, how are the lakes? Currently I live in a nicer burb of Rochester and from what I understand houses are less expensive up here, but my tax is a lot more and I pay income tax. I pay over $5,000/year in taxes for a $173k house. I am trying to really get a quantiative number on the cons and pros of moving.

Thanks in advance,

Re: How is Living in Dallas?

tax will be about 2k cheaper on house....I would shoot for Frisco if you want to live in town....it is about 35 minutes North of Dallas and is right off tollway.....
170 should get you in a very nice neighborhood I am guessing 3bdr 2bth around 2-2500 sq feet....this is all sort of guessing but, I think that is the ballpark.....Frisco is an up and coming town and did very well during all of the down turn
Or go a little further North to Prosper or Celina.....I live even further North but, I wanted land and no way you can purchase land in the burbs......
Now Dallas as a town in my opinion.....sucks move to Fort Worth the people are nicer they are more fun have more bars etc.....party town. Dallas is snooty IMHO
Not sure if that helps any....I have lived in this area about 40+ years
I would not live any closer to Dallas than I am now.....I am 9 miles from in my opinion one of the best lakes in the area.....Lake Ray Roberts.....

Fort Worth and 'burbs are a lot better IMHO than Dallas, but most of that is my value system. I tend to live simple and basic and I prefer an environment that is welcoming and relaxed. FW is known locally as "Cowtown".

Sometimes I feel like I need my Passport to go to Dallas.

If you are an "upscale" yuppie you would be happy in Frisco or Colleyville. If you are a laid back but cultured country boy look in Arlington, between D and FW, or Weatherford, west of FW.

If you want solitude and friendly neighbors come to Whitt. Nothing fancy or pretentious here; nobody cares how much you make or how much you have. They care about character.

Re: How is Living in Dallas?

It's been a few years (left there the last time in early '03) but I loved living in the DFW area and would move back in a heartbeat!

First thing; find out where you're going to be working and look in that general vicinity for a place to live. There are lots of little pockets of niceness scattered all around the metroplex so there's really no reason for a long commute. For example, the last time I moved there I wound up buying a house in Duncanville and actually liked living there. Ask just about anyone; it isn't a "preferred place" like Frisco, but it was close to work and as it turned out was a good place to live. There's lots of areas like that scattered all over the place. You'll survive. ;)

The overall cost of living is going to be similar to where you're at now. Property taxes vary by city and there is no state income tax, but they get you one way or another.

I actually live in Dallas. North Dallas/Preston Hollow is really nice. Easy commute to anywhere in the area from Irving to Plano. The 'burbs creep me out. ;) All the houses the same, built by the same builder, yet all are "custom". How does that work, exactly ?? :p

Re: How is Living in Dallas?

Dallas is another large city with its obvious pros and cons. I'm not going to get into them, but one of the biggest pros is the quality of the women--dangerously good looking. I used to travel in and out of Longview, Tyler and Dallas. You Tyler people should know plenty about the Big D.

My company closed down our 40 person office in Dallas, thinking 80% of the people would move to Wisconsin--only to get one person to transfer for 3 months (before he retired.) Texans never want to live other places--turning in promotions, etc. to stay there. They love the place.

Like #6 said, you've got to figure out where your job is going to be--and move in that direction. Dallas homes should be very affordable, especially with foreclosures available to people that are handymen. Out of all the large cities, I see only Houston and Atlanta to have a lower cost housing market.

Rochester, NY is a great place, but it's in New York. The farther north you go, and the older society you live in, they figure out more ways to get their greedy tax collector's hands in your pocket. At one point, life is not worth it. Corruption's had more years to be a big part of day to day life up nawth.

My state is broke, but they're not trying to stick it to us on property tax. Taxes on my 3500 square foot house on 4 acres would cost me $650 per year, however our property taxes have been waived since my wife is on social security disability. There again, our public schools' facilities are pretty disappointing.

Good luck on your move. Getting within 2 hours of home should be great.

As others have stated just find out where the job is located and look around there. I lived in FW for 13 years and loved it, but when I took a job in McKinney (20 miles N of Dallas) I moved closer to that when I could. I commuted 63 miles one way for almost 3 years. I moved to small town of less than 6000 just east of McKinney, it has excellent schools, alot of new housing and is right off of Lake Lavon.

If you've, lived in that are before you may not have any problem with the language. Otherwise you will have to learn to speak Texan.

Easiest way to learn is to start practicing such terms as "boy howdy!" and " How 'bout them Cowboys". In no time at all you will be talking like a native Texan.

Actually my wife has relatives living in a suburb of Fort Worth and we love to visit there. As well as great fishing all around them, they have wonderful access to museums, art galleries, etc. and the choice of places to dine are unbelievable.

Being from New Mexico with it's large percentage of public lands for hunting and other recreational activities and the preponderance of mountains, the lack of those two things are the only things that I really dislike about the D/FW area. If you were raised in Tyler and have been living in New York you should be used to both of those.

Sounds like a good move to me.

That's one of my favorite things about the DFW area. I've been lucky enough to live (and visit) quite a few places in the world, and I've not found ANYWHERE that has the variety, quality or quantity of restaurants that you find in the DFW metro area....NYC included. Paris isn't even in the same league, despite what the food snobs may think.

Some may argue this, but it's really hard to find a restaurant town that even comes close. You won't go hungry there, that's for sure.

All this talk is making me miss it. :(

Re: How is Living in Dallas?

Great feedback so far. I am not a big fan of "Cities" and prefer burbs and rural over city living. You would have to triple my salary to move to NYC, even then I would hesitate. I love the place I live now, it is called Fairport / Perinton. (Perinton is the town and Fairport is the village located in the center). I would love to find something similar in Dallas. I don't mind living away from work. Currently I have 12 mile commute to work and I drive by farms all the way. I do not like traffic. Lot size isn't important, though I would like to live on a Lake and have a dock.

Re: How is Living in Dallas?

Where would the new job be, location-wise? Just a general area; not the specific address. The lake + 12 mile commute may be a challenge. DFW is a HUGE area and is largely built-out (read: dense urban), and the water is generally a good distance from Dallas, Richardson, Plano, Irving, Coppell, etc. Grapevine still has a "village" feel as does some parts of Colleyville, but living on Lake Grapevine would be some bucks. Like a mill. for a 1 ac lake lot that you'd have to do a tear-down on........ Actually living directly on any lake might be an issue since most of the newer ones are Army Corps. lakes and you can't build direct lake access on some of them. TX has only one natural lake, so you're kind of limited sometimes.

Hoo Boy! In light of what you just said in the above quote, especially the part about traffic, I'm afraid the DFW area might not be for you after all.
