How is the water 1 hour away from the shore??

i never been fishing away from the shore before.

nor ever be on a boat away from the shore ..

i have a Cabin cruiser its a 24' boat. its really nice and i think i could stay overnight on the sea.. well i think i could

My boat will have a HOnda EU Generator by the time i spent the night.. to power heater and the battery and TV

basiclly. i want to find out from someone who spent alot of time few hours away in the sea.

a 1 to 2 hours away from the shore. is the wave big? will my boat rock all day long??

Is my boat to small to spent overnight that far away from the shore??

how is it spending the night few hours away?? is it scary?


If i spent overnight i will surelly have 1 jetski next to my boat . just incase so i could take my 1 kid and wife back to safety!!

also

when i sleep overnigth. i assume i dont anchor my boat. duh. because the sea is to deep... what step do i do before i sleep and leave the boat just wondering around the ocea??

i have radio.
i have a GPS which i need to learn to use and i will learn to use before i overnight stayed
I have Fish finder.. dont know how that will help me beside food..


Last questin.. is the wave bigger a few miles away than near the shore??

I am going to suggest that you go out on a party boat to fish offshore before you attempt this trip...you will get to see what it feels like to be on a MUCH larger boat ,something maybe 100' long. I have a feeling you will rethink your idea after that.....Why not overnight inshore someplace , where you could relax at anchor till you gain some experience...the idea of dragging a jet ski 1-2 hrs out and thinking you will be able to get three people back to land sounds a bit fool-hardy....how would you even know what direction to head???

Sating 1 to 2 hours our can be a huge range differential. If your boat goes 60 mph, you could be about 90 miles offshore... That far out in a 24' boat is a bad idea for an overnight stay. The boat is capable of going that far, however weather conditions must be monitored carefully, but I would not bed down for extended hours without a "Wheel Watch" to monitor the boat and the weather conditions...

Also, pulling a jetski out with you is not a good idea either. To much drag and could cause more problems. If the weather gets bad, you will be safer in the boat than on a jetski...

However, like was suggested, go out and fish and then come back into safe harbor (sounds of rivers) and anchor for the night in protected waters...

That sounds like a nice trip...

I have to agree with ezmobee. On the other hand, you could anchor off the Coronados or, if you left from the Dana Point or Long Beach area, you could stay in Avalon harbor an have a decent meal.

Ok guys. i will take every reply. i dont even know how to use the Archor. i assyme you just let it out and drag the boat a little until it dont move.. is that all i do.. just drop it ?

i will no go anywhere until i fell ready todo so and specially know my way around the sea without using the power GPS. maybe a use of a compass i should learn to use first..

I do not want to knock you, and do not intend to, but I agree that boating course may be in order for you. You are asking alot of questions, and that is a great think, it shows that you want to learn. But I feel like you need some basic education so that you can ask more detailed and advanced questions...

Take the course and alot of things will make more sense. Then come and ask us questions for more information and things you may not have understood...

I spend 6-8 hours 15 -20 miles off shore a lot of days in the summer in my 26 foot boat, but, I pick my days and usually there are other boats close by.

If you are going to dead drift at night you best hope that you do not drift into a shipping lane or you may become a statistic.

Leave your wife and child at home, it is best to lose one fool and not two other innocent people.

If you use an anchor you will need 5-6 feet of chain, for every foot of depth you need approximately 7 feet of rope.

jezz.. English my third or second language.. i cant spell very good but. i could hell talk alot better. HEHEHE

and i never heard of Anchor before. so this is my first time even spelling of such word.

also. you guys are the expert... i will just read up on some kind of a boating school.. beside i will need it in the future.. specially my family will be on the boat with my 2 year old son. so i need to know what the heck iam getting my self into before i get into the water that far from the shore

My wife and I love sleeping/overnighting on the boat, but believe me, the best places are the most secluded,private, protected creeks, rivers and harbors where you don't have to worry about being run down by a tug boat pushing a barge or other big ship. These guys travel at night and you sure don't want to be bobbing out in the ocean with no anchor down,wind blowing you who knows where by in the morning. Think about this and start out slow and simple and you and your family will really enjoy it! Good Luck!

In Canada you are no longer allowed to operate a boat until you have passed a boating safety exam. This thread is a perfect example for the need for this legislation.

longstand, you are talking about one of the most dangerous types of boating (deep sea / off shore) that you can do. Before you even think about this you need to know much, much more than you do about seamanship.

Here is a link to an online guide to boating safety. This is the Canadian version but it applies to you as well. Read this entire section then come back and ask questions. You'll find many of us here willing to help you to understand.

Please, do not attempt an offshore trip such as this before you are confident that you understand everything on the site below.

Wow.

Why don't you overnight a few times in the harbor, in a cove, on a lake, in a river or something first? That'll give you some experience without a huge risk to you and your family. I would use an anchor, and probably 2 at that, both from the bow. I'd be in sight of land at all times. I'd have my cell phone, my wife's cell phone, and my VHF radio for emergencies.

Without any experience, I WOULD NOT attempt to spend the night 20-30 miles offshore with my family.

I recall reading in the original post that you plan on using a portable generator. It seems to me that the CO2 could fill the cuddy and lets just say things could end poorly if this setup is not well thought out. Maybe I am assuming the worst but just in case you were planning on sleeping in a cuddy with a generator running directly above you I wanted to point out the danger.

The fact is longstand that the water off of San Diego is cold and full of traffic. South is Mexico. All of those issues require a lot of study, thought and experience. I suggest that you spend some time getting to know San Diego Harbor. Lots to learn in there alone, watch for shoals in the south end!!! Stay inside the channel markers. You are correct to consider that there is no anchoring at the distances you are thinking and most drift overnight with a sea anchor which is yet another situation that needs study and experience.

Also, the Pacific off of SoCal can get very big and dangerous very fast. I like all of the suggestions here, safe boating course, time on local party boats, lots of smaller trips to gain experience etc. etc. Besides, other than the Coronados, there is nothing to see an hour or two offshore. You will be a bobbing cork and your wife won't like you as much as she does now . . .
