im glassing in my floor tommorow, and after the last layer of glass is laid, how long must i wait before i can paint the on top of the glass. im using boaters world cheepo polyester resin and 18oz thick glass...

ive heard from some that you must remove the wax from the curred resin, as it is tacky, but ive also heard that you can just simply sand it and paint it as soo as it is cured...

Many times I've painted the job with an hour of the last layup. That way it seals the resin allowing it to fully cure..just a thought :)

Mike, I have never heard of wax buildup on polyester resin. (I have heard of amine buildup on epoxy resin, however) I would thing you can paint as soon as it is hard. I do not think paint will hurt the poly surface, even if it is still a bit tacky. You can color the resin, and it may reduce or eliminate the painting requirement. The coloring agents increase the need for you to mix in more catalyst.

Just wondering guys...do you need to use some sort of special paint,or would something like tremclad be suitable?

chris...I think mikey is talking about the wax you add to the last coat of resin,it comes to the surface as it heats and seals the resin so it will cure....
Catchem... I don't know what tremclad is so I can't tell ya but we use a house paint in areas that are covered up...and the purpose is so that the resin will be sealed and cure properly...that's all :)

Chief, I never added wax to poly resin. I never heard of that. All my coats of polyester resin hardened up without a problem without wax. Now, gelcoat is supposed to be sealed with a saran wrap-like substance to help it cure. However, I just used time instead.

Chris...if you have resin that fully cures without putting a sealer on or wax in you are using a finishing resin that already has the wax in it...Poly resin needs to be sealed from the air to fully cure...you can even cure it underwater. If you are buying gelcoat for doing patches the same thing applies, the wax is already added...just a thought :)

Re: how long before painting after glassing floor

heres what i meant.. i had placed a nice layer of poly resin all over my console that i am building, and wanted to know how long to wait till i could paint it...it wasnt wax( i am new) , it was just tacky resin the following day, after 2 days it is rock hard!

i will be glassing a layer of 18oz roven woving on my floor of my 17 foot center console, since the manufacturer only did the seams, i want to cover the WHOLE THING for a thick build up and longer lasting abrasion resistance... after that cures, do i wait till its rock hard or do i just wait a few hours or so, or does it even matter?

it don't matter...like I said I have painted many projects in less than an hour after the last layup...and that's all I'm gonna say on the subject

Absolutely Catchem...I just wouldn't use anything thinned with lacquer thinner or acetone, or xylol until she is fully cured. Oil based is fine...er actually very good...just a thought :)
