I have the opportunity to pick up an Interstate 27M marine/RV deep cycle battery, has been sitting without charge for 2 years, the owner wants $20 for it. Would you think the battery is still good if it were stored properly?

doubtful, they do not like being discharged. if it had been on a battery minder, i would be tempted. i am happy to get 3 years out of a battery.

I highly doubt that the owner has had the battery on a charger, it was more than likely discharged and left like that. Get your flywheel yet?

I got 5 years out of a DieHard marine starting battery (was still great when I sold the boat) and 5 years out of a DieHard deep cycle (VERY light use). Actually still have that one and it's still in use. I never stored them on a maintainer but they weren't fully discharged either.

Well for $20 it's probably worth a shot, I need a batt to run aux equipment.

Well it's a crapshoot. It's not guarenteed to be unusable but 2 years is a long time.

If you pick it up, throw it on a charger for a few days in a well ventilated area. It just may come back to life.

I've seen batteries that have sat for 2 years come back to life after a few charge cycles. I've also seen batteries that die after only 3 months use from new.

20 used or about 140 new from crappy tire.

I have never had one that was discharged that long come back to life.
It may just be my luck though....

I average about 3 to 4 years out of a starting battery. It gets put in the shop and charged once a month over the winter.

Oh yeah, I would do it.

It is still under warrentee. If it doesn't work, take it back and tell them you lost the receipt. They have date of manufacture on them. Along with the warrentee info printed on them usually.

Hey bk,
I think that battery has a 30 month pro-rated warranty, so no real value there if it is no good. If the seller will put a charge in it, you can take it to your mechanic and have him load test if for you. Good luck.

Crap shoot !!!
I think for $20 I would offer him $10 and give no more than $15. Around here you can sell it to a reconditioning shop for $5. That way you stand to lose no more than $10
I trust batteries for 3 years and use them for 5 on the boat. I have one 0 to 3 year old and one 3 to 5 year old battery on board at all times.

Well I got more info, the battery was stored in the basement off the floor in a box. I've read on one of the used sites about companies that do battery refreshing, anyone ever use one?

I would get yourself a product called a BatteryMinder Plus. It is one of the best investments you will make for your batteries. This product does it all: slow charge, refresh and maintain. I rotate one of these through my 4 batteries all winter long.

The cranking battery in my boat is an interstate grp 24 deepcycle, the date on it is Oct 2005 and still going.

but the one that's been sitting without a charge -- worthless, IMHO.
