Can Anyone tell me what the best rating is for a Battery for the 1990 50HP Force? How many amps are sufficient enough to crank the engine. I just picked up this engine and I looks like my current battery is just not enough to crank it. Well, it cranks, just doesn't turn over. I know I need to tune it up, but it should at least start. just not enough Juice to spin the starter enough to get it to go. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

In boating its common to get the biggest and most powerful battery that will fit in the space provided, the few $$ difference in cost between one that meets the minimum requirements and a better one means nothing when you're on the water.

So could it be possibly correct to state that the reason my previous engine wouldn't start was that the battery was not strong enough? it did the same thing this one is doing...

The battery is just one of the many possible causes of slow cranking. Check all of the connections and not just at the battery, take each one apart and clean the surface. Also check the battery cables to see if they're in good shape, they can look good from the outside, but be bad inside. The starter may be weak too.

Go get a free battery test before buying a new one. If the battery is good then look at all the connections and cables.
Try another battery that is known good before you buy one.
