How many cats is too many?

A few weeks ago a house was discovered in the Milwaukee area containing over one hundred cats. The owner had died or moved to a nursing home and a relative was keeping the bathtubs full of food.<br /><br />I have thre cats in the house and I'm always tripping on them, throwing them out of bed, off the countertops and tables, pulling them out of houseplants, closets, drawers, guests' legs, feeding them, cleaning up puke, hairballs, broken dishes, whatever they've fished out of the sink, and then there are the litter boxes...<br /><br />I really like cats but I can't imagine having one more around the house, how could an old lady manage with that many cats? Cats are pretty wild at their best, I think mine would try to eat me if I was weakened enough, Isn't it kind of dangerous to tip the balance that far in the cats' favor?<br /><br />Anyone here live with a lot of cats?

Our cat reproduced, and had 5 kittens.<br /><br />I FINALLY got rid of all but 1. <br />We kept 1 male. He's quite the character.<br /><br />Of the 5 (+ mom), they were going through food worse than my teenagers. They stunk up my garage too.<br />I was on the edge, and just about ready to use them for crab bait the next trip to the coast!<br />Luckily, the kids' friends took them.<br /><br />Momma cat is going to go too. She's turned kinda feral these past few months. She's real mean to her offspring now. I don't know if that's normal or what. <br /><br />2 cats is the most you need, unless you have a real mouse problem.<br />I live in the country on some acreage, and 2 is all we can handle.<br /><br />H.

Any cat "IN THE HOUSE" is too many in my house.<br />I do not and never will tolerate any animals in the house.<br />Might as well go sleep with the hog or the horse or the cow.<br />They're all still just animals and have no sense of human cleanliness, and I don't care if they have designated areas, they'll go wherever they want to, especially when you're gone.<br />That's a big PERIOD even............^

One of my daughters is known as "The Cat Lady" in the small town near where she lives out in the country.<br /><br />Her usual population is 30 to 40, mostly outdoor, neutered, well fed and cared for. (She is a Nurse.) Many of them circulate indoors and outdoors, but there are very rarely more than 3 or 4 in the house at once. Several that I know personally have been there for 12-15 years.<br /><br />Their guardian is a 120lb Lab, who was preceded by a 140lb German Shepherd. He keeps them in line and keeps the coyotes away. She has no children and spends a good sized family worth on their food and medical care.<br /><br />That is not too many for her, but it would be far too many for most folks.

120 lb Dog would eat enough food let alone that many cats..... and on a nurses salery. That is one cat loving woman.

1 is too many for me, and my 1/2 Chocolate Lab 1/2 Weimaraner! I am still laughing about another post, that kinda went off the deep end, and charred a few feathers, about how to keep cats out/or off a boat. One guy replied "WOOF"<br />Still laughing about the comedy of it, not any hurt feelings.

1 cat is 2 to many! Definitely not a cat lover here - Have a friend that sells the Hardy and Mahoney outside wood and coal furnaces and he says cats make good fuel for them. Shucks, that many cakes would make hot water to heat the house for almost a week (but it sure wouldn't smell to nice around the house.

I have 2. They are the Admiral's Kitty's, I was going to say more that 2 but now that I have the German Shorthair I don't see the cats anymore. So I suppose the answer is as many as you want an 1 real good Dog!
