Can anyone give me a good estimate on the amount of 3M 5200 I will need to put in a 2" x 11ft stringer w/ fillets? An educated guess would be good. Just need a general idea because the stuff is like 12 or 13 bucks at Lowes for a tube.

Are you going to cover the stringer with glass? If so 5200 is a bit of overkill. I used PL Premium polyurethane adhesive to bed my stringers. Its much cheaper and Lowes carries it.

Is it thick enough to form fillets? Also is it compatible with epoxy resins? Yup the stringer will be coated with epoxy.

I think it takes a week to fully cure and harden so may not be the best material for bedding and making fillets. Not even sure it'll be sandable to make your joints smooth for the glass. I'm not saying it can't be used for that application but it seems that other fillers would be cheaper and more user friendly.

As far as volume, I remember using about a tube and a half of the 28 ounce tubes of PL Premium on each of my 11 foot stringers.

The bedding is meant to hold the stringer off the glass to prevent hard spots. Use just enough to hold the stringer up about a 1/4". I recommend using thickened epoxy to make the fillets. PL works well because it will bond well enough to hold the stringer in place while you glass over it and it stays flexible. Remove any excess adhesive that squeezes out of the joint. It is meant to form a bond and as a bedding, not as a filler. If you go with 5200 I recommend using it in the same manner. But its gonna cost ya.:)

Yeah 5200 is super thick and really tough to move around once its on. Use PL premium to bed the stringer, then mix up some PB it will be cheaper than 5200 I promise. I would guess that to bed the stringer and fillet with 5200 would take at the very least 6 -7 tubes at 11-12 bux at home depot. (I base that on us using 2 tubes of PL to bed our stringer, guesstimating 2 more on each side to form a wide enough fillet).

Glass bubbles, fumed silica (cabosil) and some resin might cost you the same as all those tubes of 5200 if we are talking a gallon of resin. BUT!!!!, you will have enough fillet goo to fillet your stringer, transom, and maaaaybe the deck.

We used a small paper bag full of glass bubbles and cabosil and prob about a gallon of resin and we filled all our patch jobs on the hull, filleted the transom and the stringer. We have a small amount left might be able to do the deck.

Another alternative is 4200 which is the same characteristics of PL but made by 3M. It will probably cost more the PL.

Also, I had issues with making fillets with PL. I don't know if it was temp, humidity or just lack of experience. You can attempt the fillet then come back and fill in and smooth with PB as I did with my transom support.
