How much amperage/voltage in 1991 9.9 coil wire?

I have a problem with my kicker motor..it won't die. I can kill it by breaking the ground connection to my coil (I could also buy another black box, but would rather not spend the $$..anybody got one cheap).

So, how much current is going through the coil ground wire. I'd like to run that through a momentary off pushbutton switch, and use that as a kill switch.

Is a 10 amp switch ok to have that current always flowing? How about a 15 amp. I am thinking cole-hersee marine switchs.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Amperage is extremely low. Voltage is extremely high. Maybe high enough to arc the contacts in the switch. Maybe enough to reach out and zap you too. What's wrong with the kill button it's equipped with not to mention the deadman switch?

Admiral,
Not sure what is not working with the kill/safety circuits...they do work as intended, sending a ground short into the 'black box' CDI. but they do not kill the engine! I even shorted the circuit line directly to the engine body (essentially bypassing the kill buttons, but doing exactly what their circuit does with a shorter run to ground). It lowers the rpm, but does not kill the engine. There is obviously a problem with in the CDI, and I'd rather not pay $135 for a replacement. I 'experimented' with 'breaking' the coil ground wire, and that does stop the engine, and with no visible sparking. Any help or suggestions are appreciated.

I'm concerned about a failure once you stop the motor and try to restart it. Murphy's Law eliminates that possibility happening conveniently at the dock. De-grounding the CD might eventually kill it. You might be better off choking it to death. Back in the 50s, that's how it was done on a lot of motors. Apparently the kill is only affecting one cylinder.

Since this is my kicker, a non-restart would not be catastrophic, since I would have the main to 'gethome' on. Unfortunately, this motor does not have a manual choke. My only other alternative is to unhook the fuel line, but that takes 5 minutes or more to 'kill' the engine. Any idea why only one cylinder would be killed? Do folks 'work' on these CDI boxes, or just replace them? Is replacing indicated? I could start a search for a used CDI.
