I am looking to purchase a new set of thermostats for my 1986 150HP V-6.

The cost of a new thermostat by itself is $8.24
The cost of the same t-stat with a gasket it $14.08

Is a gasket really worth the $5.84 they are asking for the difference???

Am I missing something, like gold plating, or maybe they send a guy out to scrape off the old gasket?

Piece of mind, no sweat replacement. No diddling trying to save an old gasket you shouldn't reuse any way. No making a new gasket that may ultimately fail.Worth every penny!

Got any blue RTV? Even if you tear the old one getting it off, just layer the glue and stick her back. Did it year and half ago and other than seeing blue, you'd never know I did it. I didn't have a gasket, didn't get one with my stat (from iboats) and didn't want to drive 100 miles RT to the nearest Merc dealer.

The cost is not only because of what it is made of but also how common the part is.

That thermostat may fit many different applications therefore they make many and sell many.

That gasket may be unique for that application only and therefore sits in inventory for a long time.

A gasket is worth a million bucks if you dont have one and need one !!! for the few dollars it costs get one and have peace of mind. There used to be a great gasket replacement in England called "hermetite' I improvised with that and a cereal box on emergency occasions and it worked a treat !!!!

I already ordered the kit, it just seems pricey for what it is. I guess it is the law of supply and demand.

Given the price of most outboard parts, and the time it would take to get the gasket material and fabricate a gasket, it seems pretty cheap to me. Add to that the downtime on the engine, and it's a no-brainer, it seems to me.

That said, they should include the gasket as a matter of course. Who doesn't install a new gasket. This reminds me to always ask about gaskets when I order parts like that.

Not exactly. A carb kit doesn't necessarily need a new float, even on the older models. If you've already replaced the float, then it's unneeded. On the other hand, if you're pulling the thermostat, it's always advisable to replace the gasket, even if it looks OK.

It'd be more like a carb kit without the bowl gasket.

I agree with your logic........but then why not offer a kit with and without the float for the older models. I tried to find one for my 62' that had the float but couldnt.

Sort of like how waterpump kits are frequently offered with and without a new housing and you buy accordingly.

There is my point exactly!!! You can buy a waterpump kit WITH the housing for less than $2 more than without.
How is it that a thermostat gasket is worth 3 times what a waterpump housing is worth?

If you would go to an authorized Johnson-Evinrude dealer, you can buy the genuine factory gasket, part number 0321184, for only $1.29.
