how much power do you really need

ok i have a 17ft vip vision that currently has a i/o with cobra drive. the motor is a ford 2.3l rated at 130 hp. the boat has a coast guard rating of about 160-180 range with regards to hp. now the big question. i've read that although twins are not pratical is there really an advantage to them. does twin 90's weigh less then one 150 or 200. any information would be appricated. thanks

A typical 89 Evinrude 200 weighs 450 lbs. A 100 is 300 lbs.
The main advantage of twins is off shore security in the event one fails.
Twins have twice the weight,twice the maintenance,twice the drag twice the complication.And will burn more fuel than a single of the same output.

is there a simple formula that one can do to fiqure out how much power one needs to go a certin speed. and what determines a hulls abilty to handle a certine amount of power.
