I run mine once a month just to move old gas out of the system and new gas in. I always use Stabal 360 and Mercury engine clean in my gas and since using my motor is running better then ever. The engine is a 1997 Mercury 2 cyl 2 stroke. This is not to advise anyone to do as I do because I do not have many years experience with boats and outboards. By the way I let it run about 15-20 min. 66.JPG

With a 4stroke engine it needs to get to running temperature to boil off oil and combustion byproduct stuff in the crankcase in my opinion and experience. Otherwise that condensation issue can come up inside the pan and valve covers and encourage corrosion. I used to take my then-newer truck on a very short coffee run almost every day, then happened to look in the oil filler once and saw a LOT of water beads and not a good jelly like substance forming. Asked the oil change guys about it, they said they have some bulletins about things like that to look for. Just sayin' every engine is different but sometimes running just to see if it will start and idle can create different problems.

One of the products of gasoline combustion is water. If you don't let the exhaust system get hot enough to vaporize it, the water will sit there and rust it out from the inside. This is one of the major problems with running engines for brief periods.

Of course most marine exhausts rust from the outside inwards.

I had about a cup of water in my crankcase oil of my outboard this fall when I pulled it out because my thermostat was stuck open all season.
