I just got an old Bayliner with a 50 hp force. This is my introduction to the boat world.

So, when I look at the little hole in the back where the water is supposed to shoot out, all is see is a heavy mist or spray. It's not like a full head of water coming out of that hole. Should it be? Do I need a new water pump?

Thanks!

I apologize if the following is a little crude...but...

I've seen people describe that little orifice as a "pee hole".

That's just about a perfect description, judging by my Force 75HP.

In other words, it's supposed to do more than mist or spray.

I'd suspect the water pump/impeller, and I def wouldn't run the motor like that.

Like DeanPA said it should be more then a mist. It's a good pressured stream.

Sounds like a new impeller is in order for you.

A mew impeller is always a good idea when you buy a used motor, no telling how long the old one has been in there or what condition it is in.

If your 50 is an older moder, pre 1995?, then you will not have a steady stream of water coming out.
The only visible water discharge is from the exhaust pressure relief holes located on the rear of the midsection. It will spray and splatter.

Is it easy to change an impeller. Any tips on a site that has the process outlined, or a good source for a book?

I beleive it is an older model. Is there a year number on it somewhere? If it is an older model how should the water come out of that hole? In a sputtery mist like it is?

Thanks!

When I do the water pump, I also do the housing too since you can usually find the whole thing as a package. I ahvent done a 50hp but have done a 70 hp Chrysler which is similar. The manaul I have used which is pretty good is the Seloc manual and they outline everything very well and tell you what to do and also more importantly what NOT to do. Regardless what manual you use there is a trick that we learned when getting it all back together. Getting it apart and putting a new waterpump housing or impeller is the easy part, getting the whole thing back on the engine and the shaft lined up is the hard part.

Get a roll of wrapping paper, like from Christmas and remove the cardboard tube from the middle. Slip it up into the inside of the engine and over the hole which the driveshaft must go into and get someone to hold it in place. Insert the driveshaft of the unit yu have out into it and slide it up into the cardboard tube, using it as a guide to get it into the hole in the powerhead, once it matches up with the splines and inserts into the hole, leave about an inch gap and make a tear in the cardboard tube that goes along the spiral way it is made. Pull it down so it tears the roll and comes out in a curlyque, all the while holding the lower unit up in place in the power head. The wrapping paper roll should come out completely just like a really long curly french frie and then push the lower unit up into the powerhead the remaining inch and wala, it's in. My girlfriend came up with that idea after I spent hours trying to line it up and get it fitted in right blindly.

make sure there is not a piece of dirt in the hose 1st blow the hose out or clean the with wire.then change the impeller.as for as lineing up lwr.unit i shake the flywheel when putting the lwr.unit back up to the hole.or you may have to turn the flywheel a little. i dont know your mech.background.my impeller is easy to change about 30 mins.and i didnt know what i was doing.

Seloc or Clymer repair manuals are good for basic maintenance.

There should be an id tag located on the transom mounting bracket.
Manufacturer, model number, and serial number should appear there. Post that info here and we can id the motor year for you.

I've found that on my force there is never a huge stream of water because the pump is high on the lower end in respect to the water inlet holes. However, when I changed my water pump there was a major change in water flow. Don't try it without a manual. Its not that hard and if someone else does it it will cost you.

P.S. You will run better
