Since we have so many "How do I break in an engine" threads I thought I'd post up how NOT to. Check out this video on how the cash 4 clunkers are engines are being sent to the grave yard.

Kind of makes me a little irate, but oh well. Maybe those would make good rebuildable core engines if the silica sand didn't tear up the mains and cylinders too bad.

This thread has nothing to do with breaking in an engine.

I hated that program of destruction as well but probably agree that a 95 Olds Aurora that has lived in the snow and salt of Minnesota for 240+ miles is probably a clunker.

The worst one I saw on youtubes was probably a gorgeous Volvo probably a S60 or 80.

My sister traded in her GMC Jimmy. I wanted to buy that truck from her to use as a tow vehicle but the $4500 was more than I could match. Another waste of a perfectly good vehicle. Had a tow package and everything. I think it had 160k miles.

So this is just another C4C political thread. Yet again. Does the whining never end?

What a shame. They could auction these cars off and get back some of their money. Waste of goods cars.

The dealers all had a lot of real clunkers, but some very nice cars and trucks as well. I was a 2002 ford explorer with 68k on it, like new inside and out as well as a 2003 caddy that was mint with 85k on it. off to the crusher they went. I think it would have been better served to either part them out or donate them to the TRULY needy.

pretty sad....

the salvages yards are gonna miss out of some good money making cars...and if you own a vehicle in that era you might miss out on some good parts as there wont be many available in those salvage yards...

just think off all teh contamination to the ground when those motors blew..they leak that fluid on the ground and also all the pollutants from running those engine sitting there doing nothing...smart idea it is...

If they are in good shape, thats sounds like a better idea, I agree on that.

After that botched idea, now the dealers have few used cars. The ones they do have will generate higher dollars because of it. That means the consumer will pay more. Huh? How did that program help? Helped the foreign manufacturers. I believe the top 4 out of 5 cars bought were foreign with the exception of 1 Ford. I don't believe Chevy even made the top 10. Alot of people can't afford new cars and the ones they can afford were demolished. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me... But then again, there is alot going on right now that doesn't make alot of sense....

Not federal tax or state income tax...that is a myth. Some states may charge an excise tax which is normal for a state that charges tax if you trade a car in. Or, the sales tax was charged on the full price of the car before the clunker discount.

Still...not technically an income tax.

Taxes...... ughhhhhhhhh. The worst thing that ever happened to everybody was everybody getting an SSN stamped on their forehead as a tot.

The clunker program was tied to emissions as well, that is why the car's major components had to be destroyed beyond any rebuildable state.

...of course nobody seems to add in the pollution a new car has already produced just being manufactured...

Re: How NOT to break in an engine ( Cash for Clunkers engine destruction ) :(

Just found out today from my brother, who runs an auto auction in California, what happens with the cars.

When the dealers bring the cars to his lot from the dealer, the engine has already been drained of oil. The while it is on his lot, they disable the engine with the silica treatment.

The cars are then sent to auto dismantlers where they have 60 days to remove the parts that they want. At that point, the chassis and the engine are shredded.

The cash for clunkers program is just a blip in time for the used and new car market. Everything will settle back as if it never happened in a month or two. That includes the supply of used cars.

Re: How NOT to break in an engine ( Cash for Clunkers engine destruction ) :(

Why wouldn't they allow people to buy the 'clunkers'? Naturally some cars were indeed clunkers, but the Lotus, Mazerratis (sp?) and just plain newer/nice cars and SUVs would have helped so many people. Heck, i just saw a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Limited with 80K on youtube.. the exact SUV I am looking for. I would have happily bought that from the program.

Also, is it pure profit for the scrap yards? Do they get all of these cars for free?
